Andrew Cuomo (D) signed into state law the bail reform measures that allow suspects accused of\u00a0second-degree manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, child sex crimes, and making threats of terrorism to walk free from jail without ever having to post bail.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>Coinciding with the state law is New York City\u2019s Supervised Release Program,\u00a0which <a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/www1.nyc.gov\/office-of-the-mayor\/news\/530-19\/city-expands-award-winning-nationally-recognized-supervised-release-program-response-state\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">allows<\/a>\u00a0thousands of criminal suspects to be released following their arrests without having to post bail or be monitored by social workers.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, crime in New York City has skyrocketed. The latest city <a href=\"https:\/\/www1.nyc.gov\/assets\/nypd\/downloads\/pdf\/crime_statistics\/cs-en-us-city.pdf\">crime statistics<\/a> show that although murders are down compared to the same time last year, rapes have increased 24 percent, robberies have increased 46 percent, grand larceny has increased nearly 60 percent, grand larceny auto has increased 85 percent, and transit crimes have increased more than 70 percent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe most important city on the globe has become the laughing stock of the globe. And the dysfunctionality of our city has cascaded throughout the entire country,\u201d New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/03\/27\/eric-adams-says-nyc-has-become-laughing-stock-amid-crime-surge\/\">told<\/a> a crowd\u00a0of hundreds of New York Police Department (NYPD) officers this week.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t let anyone break your spirit, tell you that New Yorkers don\u2019t love the men and women of the NYPD,\u201d Adams said. \u201cEverywhere I go they say, \u2018Protect our police.\u2019 Ignore the noise. \u2026 The people of their city want their city back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A set of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/565309809\/Hochul-Public-Safety-Plan#from_embed\">proposals<\/a> from Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) would only partially alter the bail reform law, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Allowing judges to set bail based on prior criminal history<\/li>\n<li>Ensuring repeat criminal offenders are eligible for bail<\/li>\n<li>Making gun-related crimes eligible for bail<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A number of jailbreak organizations \u2014 including the Soros-linked Center for American Progress, the Center for Popular Democracy, United We Dream, and MoveOn, as well as the Zuckerberg-linked FWD.us \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fwd.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/NationalSignOnLetter.pdf\">are lobbying<\/a> New York lawmakers to oppose any changes to the bail reform law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very troubled by recent proposals from Governor Kathy Hochul that would increase incarceration and racial disparities and undo years of work towards ending the criminalization of poverty and children,\u201d the groups wrote in a letter:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Mass incarceration was born of hasty political posturing and the fallacy that we can have justice or safety, but not both. <strong>Mass incarceration delivered generations of harm to the same Black, brown, poor, and immigrant communities<\/strong> hardest hit by crime without delivering them more safety. [Emphasis added]\n<p>That is why <strong>we are calling upon Governor Hochul, Lieutenant Governor Benjamin, and legislative leaders to protect bail<\/strong>, discovery, and Raise the Age reforms. [Emphasis added]\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Along with Adams, NYPD Commissioner Keechant Shea is <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/03\/28\/nypds-keechant-sewell-in-albany-to-pitch-tougher-bail-reform\/\">urging<\/a> lawmakers to quickly change the bail reform law, as she has attributed the policies to a drastic rise in crime.<\/p>\n<p>Polling released this week shows that about <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/03\/28\/no-cash-bail-law-a-bust-ny-voters-demand-changes-poll\/\">56 percent<\/a> of New Yorkers believe the bail reform law has been bad for the state while just 3 in 10 said it is good policy. Nearly 64 percent said the law has increased crime across the state and 84 percent said judges should have broad discretion to set bail for criminal suspects.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>John Binder is a reporter for Breitbart News.
