Val Demings (D., Fla.) \/ Getty Images\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\t\t\t<span class=\"text-gray text-xs md:text-lg\"><a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/author\/collin-anderson\/\" title=\"Posts by Collin Anderson\" class=\"author url fn text-red-700\" rel=\"author\">Collin Anderson<\/a> \u2022 March 29, 2022 5:30 pm<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>After Florida gas prices topped record highs, Sunshine State congresswoman Val Demings distanced herself from liberal environmental policies she supported just a year and a half ago that would curtail oil drilling in the United States.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baynews9.com\/fl\/tampa\/news\/2022\/03\/28\/val-demings-interview#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.baynews9.com\/fl\/tampa\/news\/2022\/03\/28\/val-demings-interview%23&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1648671579528000&#038;usg=AOvVaw0nBM6Q78hCBgst-ZJhQPUe\">Asked Sunday<\/a>\u00a0about her support for the Green New Deal and whether the Biden administration&#8217;s &#8220;clean energy&#8221; policies are &#8220;to blame for these soaring gas prices,&#8221; Demings said she does &#8220;not support the Green New Deal&#8221; and accused her opponent, Republican senator Marco Rubio, of &#8220;playing politics.&#8221; In September 2020, however, Demings\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/demings.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/rep-demings-announces-support-economic-renewal-agenda\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/demings.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/rep-demings-announces-support-economic-renewal-agenda&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1648671579528000&#038;usg=AOvVaw0WoXStFxUy8ysX99C2BmMs\">cosponsored<\/a>\u00a0the THRIVE Agenda, a $10 trillion liberal environmental bill pushed by the Green New Deal Network. The legislation calls for a carbon-free electric grid by 2035 and ensures federal funds allocated through the bill &#8220;do not expand fossil fuel infrastructure.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Demings&#8217;s attempt to distance herself from Democrats&#8217; anti-oil policies comes as Florida experiences sky-high prices at the pump. In early March, gas prices in the state surged to an average of $4.38 a gallon, the highest level in Florida history. But Demings has refused to blame the trend on her party&#8217;s energy agenda\u2014on Sunday, she instead said gas prices have increased due to oil companies &#8220;who take advantage of crisis situations like the one we are in to drive up costs as opposed to reducing it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Demings also refused during her Sunday interview to call for increased oil production in the United States, a position Rubio\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/marcorubio\/status\/1501372761918394370?s=20&#038;t=--igjUn1kFh5ZWK1Gfc1vQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/twitter.com\/marcorubio\/status\/1501372761918394370?s%3D20%26t%3D--igjUn1kFh5ZWK1Gfc1vQ&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1648671579528000&#038;usg=AOvVaw3hCPogl7X2oJMhmTFlo9Yc\">regularly promotes<\/a>. Under former president Donald Trump, the United States became a net annual petroleum exporter for the first time in more than 70 years. That status has shifted under President Joe Biden, with the United States set to again become a net oil importer in 2022. The reversal comes after Demings&#8217;s House Democratic colleagues\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/politics\/how-dems-helped-spike-gas-prices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/politics\/how-dems-helped-spike-gas-prices\/&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1648671579528000&#038;usg=AOvVaw0RSgk9qOVBRU6g_AjchOGZ\">pressured oil executives<\/a>\u00a0to decrease production due to climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Demings promoted her support for the THRIVE Agenda in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/demings.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/rep-demings-announces-support-economic-renewal-agenda\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/demings.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/rep-demings-announces-support-economic-renewal-agenda&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1648671579528000&#038;usg=AOvVaw0WoXStFxUy8ysX99C2BmMs\">September 2020 press release<\/a>, which says the bill will &#8220;transform our country and future&#8221; through &#8220;a new, clean economy.&#8221; The release includes a quote from Sen. Ed Markey (D., Mass.), who co-authored the Green New Deal with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D., N.Y.). The release also touts the Green New Deal Network&#8217;s backing of the bill and quotes Sunrise Movement cofounder Varshini Prakash, who said the THRIVE Agenda &#8220;delivers a clear mandate for the next administration and Congress to get started on a Green New Deal.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the THRIVE Agenda&#8217;s anti-oil provisions, the bill\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/biden-administration\/progressives-push-biden-to-include-10-trillion-climate-plan-in-infrastructure-package\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/biden-administration\/progressives-push-biden-to-include-10-trillion-climate-plan-in-infrastructure-package\/&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1648671579528000&#038;usg=AOvVaw3Actkv1kjsB0nkD7aAQLVU\">calls for<\/a>\u00a0trillions of dollars in public spending to achieve &#8220;real full employment&#8221; and &#8220;reshape our society&#8221; through government jobs. Demings&#8217;s support for the legislation likely helped her\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lcv.org\/endorsements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.lcv.org\/endorsements\/&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1648671579528000&#038;usg=AOvVaw0YB1_INh134dM_suo0vq6K\">gain the support<\/a>\u00a0of the League of Conservation Voters, a liberal environmental group that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lcv.org\/article\/lcv-supports-green-new-deal-resolution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.lcv.org\/article\/lcv-supports-green-new-deal-resolution\/&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1648671579528000&#038;usg=AOvVaw2GlsLZsvWeBz_zZ-8W_4Dl\">backs the Green New Deal<\/a>. The group also joined a coalition that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrdc.org\/court-battles\/league-conservation-voters-v-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.nrdc.org\/court-battles\/league-conservation-voters-v-trump&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1648671579528000&#038;usg=AOvVaw2xREVG0wUFpANw3whH6UXW\">sued the Trump administration<\/a>\u00a0in an attempt to maintain an Obama-era offshore drilling ban. Demings has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fec.gov\/data\/receipts\/?data_type=processed&#038;committee_id=C00498980&#038;committee_id=C00590489&#038;committee_id=C00797803&#038;contributor_name=C00135368&#038;contributor_name=C00252940\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.fec.gov\/data\/receipts\/?data_type%3Dprocessed%26committee_id%3DC00498980%26committee_id%3DC00590489%26committee_id%3DC00797803%26contributor_name%3DC00135368%26contributor_name%3DC00252940&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1648671579528000&#038;usg=AOvVaw2JcqZPeniByhDzd5NNYPT6\">received more than $12,000<\/a>\u00a0from the League of Conservation Voters and fellow liberal environmental group Sierra Club since 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Demings&#8217;s campaign communications director Christian Slater told the<i>\u00a0Free Beacon<\/i> Demings &#8220;does not support the Green New Deal.&#8221; He did not answer questions on whether Demings still supports the THRIVE Agenda and whether she would like to see Biden increase U.S. oil production.<\/p>\n<p>While Demings is not the only Democrat running to unseat Rubio, she is widely expected to take on the Republican in November. Demings has raised nearly $21 million as of Jan. 1, and none of her primary opponents have raised more than $1 million. During her Sunday interview with Bay News 9, Demings said Rubio is &#8220;struggling with his reelection&#8221; and is &#8220;willing to say anything&#8221; as a result.
