Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and other House progressives are calling to investigate and potentially impeach Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas over his wife\u2019s texts to former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows on January 6, 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Ocasio-Cortez and Rep. Mondaire Jones (D-NY) have expressed support for possible impeachment proceedings against Thomas. Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) has called for Thomas\u2019s impeachment outright despite lacking evidence of any involvement by Thomas in his wife\u2019s work.<\/p>\n<p>Ocasio-Cortez, arguably the most outspoken of the three, initially broached impeaching Thomas in comments to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/progressives-thomas-impeachment-2f93a52e-eb90-4bb1-9890-c943410419e4.html\">Axios<\/a> on Tuesday morning before taking her calls to social media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsider this: When we pushed for the 1st impeachment of Trump for illegally withholding aid to Ukraine, initially many Dems internally resisted it,\u201d Ocasio-Cortez began a lengthy Twitter <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AOC\/status\/1508829335263797251\">thread<\/a> comparing former President Donald Trump\u2019s first impeachment to the Thomas controversy. \u201cWe were chastised for being \u2018unrealistic,\u2019 that the public wouldn\u2019t be able to follow the plot, and that it would lead nowhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The congresswoman went on to claim that Trump\u2019s impeachment proved to be politically advantageous to Democrats, despite \u201cnaysayers and those claiming to be \u2018politically savvier.\u2019\u201d She argued a parallel situation is happening now with Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOften what seems like the righteous yet politically foolish thing short term ends up being the wisest choice long term. In politics, oftentimes the best decisions can also carry greatest risk. All this is to say we shouldn\u2019t dismiss actions available re: Clarence Thomas\u2019 acts,\u201d Ocasio-Cortez said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSubpoenas, investigations, and impeachment should absolutely be on the table. We shouldn\u2019t have to think twice about that. We must go where the facts take us. A failure to act puts the imperiling of democracy squarely on *our* shoulders. It\u2019s our duty to defend it,\u201d she concluded.<\/p>\n<p>Jones, who serves vice chair of the House Judiciary subcommittee overseeing federal courts, told Axios that, \u201call options have to be on the table.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a robust, distinct role for the Judiciary Committee to do its own investigation,\u201d he said. \u201cMy intention is for the Judiciary Committee, or at least the subcommittee on courts, to do precisely that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Omar came out in favor of impeaching Thomas last week, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IlhanMN\/status\/1507178853650812928\">tweeting<\/a> bluntly Thursday, \u201cClarence Thomas needs to be impeached.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The progressive outcry against Thomas began last week after a cache of messages Virginia Thomas, the justice\u2019s wife, sent Meadows on January 6 and in the months prior were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2022\/03\/24\/virginia-thomas-mark-meadows-texts\/\">revealed<\/a>. The messages showed Thomas urged the top Trump official to continue fighting \u201cthe greatest Heist of our History,\u201d referring to the 2020 election.
