That number has jumped from just seven weeks ago, when 40% said they\u2019d had it. The numbers, though, are not concrete. \u201c[A] little more than 4 in 10 say they\u2019ve tested positive for or been diagnosed with covid-19, while 10 percent say they haven\u2019t been diagnosed but know they\u2019ve had the virus,\u201d The Washington Post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/politics\/a-milestone-majority-say-they-ve-had-covid-even-more-in-gop\/ar-AAVAkm0\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis appears to be the first poll to show a majority of Americans saying they\u2019ve been infected at some point. An August poll from the Pew Research Center showed that 30 percent had tested positive or were \u2018pretty sure\u2019 they\u2019d contracted the virus. A year earlier, in August 2020, that number was 14 percent,\u201d the Post said.<\/p>\n<p>Not surprisingly, more Republicans than Democrats say they have contracted the virus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome 57 percent of Republicans say they\u2019ve contracted the virus, compared with 38 percent of Democrats. Back in January, those numbers were 50 percent and 28 percent, respectively,\u201d the liberal newspaper said. \u201cThis tracks with polls that more narrowly surveyed self-reported positive tests. It also suggests the gap has grown since the pandemic began.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Getting COVID-19 is never good, but a study in December has found that if you were already fully vaccinated, you might just turn into Superman.<\/p>\n<p>Breakthrough cases \u2014 catching the virus despite being immunized \u2014 became common as virus variants Delta and Omicron moved across the nation, but researchers from Oregon Health &#038; Science University (OHSU) found that such cases lead to \u201csuper immunity\u201d to future SARS-CoV-2 variants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t get a better immune response than this,\u201d says senior author Fikadu Tafesse, Ph.D., assistant professor of molecular microbiology and immunology in the OHSU School of Medicine, in a\u00a0university\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.ohsu.edu\/2021\/12\/16\/breakthrough-infections-generate-super-immunity-to-covid-19-study-suggests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">release<\/a>. \u201cThese vaccines are very effective against severe disease. Our study suggests that individuals who are vaccinated and then exposed to a breakthrough infection have super immunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The study found that \u201cantibodies measured in blood samples of breakthrough cases were both more abundant and much more effective \u2013 as much as 1,000% more effective \u2013 than antibodies generated two weeks following the second dose of the Pfizer vaccine.\u00a0The study suggests each exposure following vaccination actually serves to\u00a0strengthen immune response to subsequent exposures even to new variants of the virus,\u201d OHSU said in its release.<\/p>\n<p>Tafesse said the level of immunity is \u201csometimes up to 2,000 percent, so it\u2019s really high immunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think this speaks to an eventual end game,\u201d said study co-author Marcel Curlin, M.D., associate professor of infectious diseases in the OHSU School of Medicine. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t mean we\u2019re at the end of the pandemic, but it points to where we\u2019re likely to land: Once you\u2019re vaccinated and then exposed to the virus, you\u2019re probably going to be reasonably well-protected from future variants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur study implies that the long-term outcome is going to be a tapering-off of the severity of the worldwide epidemic,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><em>Joseph Curl has covered politics for 35 years, including 12 years as White House correspondent, and ran the Drudge Report from 2010 to 2015.
