John Aquilino on Friday. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>Aquilino discussed China\u2019s growing \u201cboldness\u201d in harassing Taiwan with \u201cincreased maritime and air operations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI wouldn\u2019t say I\u2019m more concerned, but I do see increased pressure, and we have to make sure we are prepared should any actions get taken,\u201d Chen said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI don\u2019t think anyone five months ago would have predicted an invasion of the [sic] Ukraine. So I think the number one lesson is: \u2018Hey, this could really happen,\u2019\u201d the U.S. admiral said.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>Chen <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/politics\/article\/3172120\/ukraine-war-lessons-make-attack-taiwan-unlikely-security-chief\"><span>contended<\/span><\/a><span> that China would study Russia\u2019s difficulties in Ukraine and become <\/span><i><span>less <\/span><\/i><span>likely to act \u201crashly\u201d against Taiwan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBeijing has never renounced the use of force against Taiwan and it has long been an open plot for it to unify Taiwan ever since 1949,\u201d Chen acknowledged. The Republic of China (ROC) government <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.taiwan.gov.tw\/content_3.php\"><span>relocated<\/span><\/a><span> to Taiwan in 1949 at the conclusion of the Chinese civil war.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI can tell in the next three years of the remaining tenure of President Tsai, Beijing is unlikely to send forces to attack Taiwan,\u201d he continued. \u201cBut we must not relax our vigilance and must be well prepared militarily and once they attack us we must counter-attack. (Photo by Sam Yeh \/ AFP) (Photo by SAM YEH\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Chen said the Chinese Communist Party was surprised not only by the stiff military resistance Ukraine mounted against the seemingly overwhelming Russian invasion force but also by the scope of Western sanctions deployed against the Russian economy. He said Beijing would become \u201cmore cautious in making any move\u201d after studying the impact of \u201cthe intervention of foreign forces in the Ukraine war.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>Chen also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.taipeitimes.com\/News\/front\/archives\/2022\/03\/25\/2003775419\"><span>addressed<\/span><\/a><span> reports of a leaked Russian intelligence document that supposedly claimed Chinese dictator Xi Jinping could order an invasion of Taiwan this autumn, to boost his political prospects and rally support ahead of the upcoming Chinese Communist Party congress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Chen dismissed this report as \u201chighly unlikely\u201d and said the \u201cso-called leaked document is part of cognitive warfare targeting Taiwan.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Chen noted that previous Chinese leaders have resisted suggestions to pass a \u201creunification law\u201d that would establish a timetable for recapturing Taiwan, and therefore put pressure on themselves to meet it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After delivering a national security report to a closed-door session of the Taiwanese legislature\u2019s Foreign Affairs and National Defense Committee, Chen <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.taipeitimes.com\/News\/front\/archives\/2022\/03\/29\/2003775636\"><span>told reporters<\/span><\/a><span> that America\u2019s Taiwan Relations Act (TRA) gives Beijing reason to believe the U.S. and its allies would \u201cbe much more involved\u201d in protecting Taiwan from Chinese attack than they have been in protecting the borders of Ukraine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Chen noted the TRA \u201cgrants legal authorization for the U.S. government to take action\u201d if Taiwan is attacked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe current situation has given China much to think about, as the U.S. has given much support to Ukraine, even without a law similar to the TRA,\u201d he said. \u201cThe conflict in Ukraine has served as a warning to Beijing not to start a war.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Chen added a note of caution that China could use the war in Ukraine to advance its own geopolitical ambitions and strengthen its alliance with Russia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cRussia has sought help from China to fight against the economic sanctions, asking Beijing to open up its foreign reserves, and to use the yuan instead of the euro and the U.S. dollar in international exchanges, which conforms to China\u2019s long-term plans to have the yuan replace the U.S. dollar in international transactions,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chen Ming-tong, Director-General of Taiwan\u2019s National Security Bureau, told a session of the Taiwanese legislature on Monday that Russia\u2019s poor performance during its invasion of Ukraine could give China second<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":41,"featured_media":2315279,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_mo_disable_npp":"","fifu_image_url":"","fifu_image_alt":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1407260","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1407260","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/41"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=1407260"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1407260\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/2315279"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1407260"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=1407260"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=1407260"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
