On Monday, the\u00a0<em>Global Times\u00a0<\/em>praised Shanghai officials for making the \u201ccourageous and necessary\u201d to depart from the policy \u2013 though less wealthy parts of the country, like northeastern Jilin province, continue to suffer under an intense lockdown regimen.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Times<\/em> highlighted the cities of Shanghai and Shenzhen for taking measures \u201cvastly different from the strict lockdown imposed at the early stage of the epidemic in Wuhan,\u201d largely due to their importance in China\u2019s and the global economy. Shenzhen, a city on the border with Hong Kong where much of the world\u2019s technology is manufactured, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2022\/03\/22\/china-declares-coronavirus-victory-shenzhen-after-forcing-workers-live-factories\/\">opted<\/a> for \u201cwork-from-home\u201d lockdowns that forced workers to live in factories to prevent production delays.<\/p>\n<p>Shanghai has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2022\/03\/28\/coronavirus-panic-in-shanghai-as-china-locks-down-26-million-people\/\">eschewed<\/a> full-city lockdowns and instead begun implementing neighborhood lockdowns \u2013 still prompting panic and hoarding, but preventing what would essentially be house arrest for the 41 million people in the Shanghai metro area.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<div id=\"attachment_20435591\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/media.breitbart.com\/media\/2022\/03\/GettyImages-1239588943.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Shoppers rummage through empty shelves in a supermarket before a lockdown as a measure against the Covid-19 coronavirus in Shanghai on March 29, 2022. (HECTOR RETAMAL\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The departure from the \u201czero-COVID\u201d method of mass house arrest that China has clung to since the pandemic began is particularly stark in light of Xi, who for months failed to address the pandemic at home in any public way, demanding Communist Party officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2022\/03\/18\/xi-jinping-finally-addresses-chinas-coronavirus-crisis-barks-at-underlings-to-stick-to-lockdowns\/\">follow<\/a> \u201cstrict implementation\u201d of quarantines this month.<\/p>\n<p>Jilin province followed Xi\u2019s orders, imposing widespread lockdowns, building \u201cmakeshift hospitals,\u201d and severely curbing residents\u2019 freedom. The\u00a0<em>Global Times<\/em>\u00a0appeared to highlight Jilin as an example of failure, an admission that the lockdown method was not working.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNortheast China\u2019s Jilin Province, where strict prevention measures have been adopted, continued recording surging infection numbers, underscoring a series of loopholes seen in the city as it handles the latest outbreak,\u201d the\u00a0<em>Global Times<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globaltimes.cn\/page\/202203\/1257028.shtml\">lamented<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, the Communist Party propaganda outlet applauded Shanghai, which did not adhere to Xi\u2019s preferred method of lockdowns.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cDid Shanghai fail in carrying out its precise dynamic zero approach and explore a new way for China to fight Omicron?\u201d the propaganda outlet asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShanghai\u2019s exploration a courageous and necessary one, especially when more suggestions were made by epidemiologists in China and overseas to adjust China\u2019s zero tolerance strategy in a more dynamic way,\u201d the publication claimed, \u201cin lowering the costs on social development and people\u2019s livelihood, striking a balance between the regular anti-epidemic work and economic growth. \u201d<br \/>The state outlet cited Chinese government-approved \u201cexperts\u201d who suddenly expressed concern for\u00a0\u201ctrouble to people\u2019s daily lives\u201d and the \u201csocial and economic cost\u201d of total lockdowns.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<div id=\"attachment_20435672\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/media.breitbart.com\/media\/2022\/03\/GettyImages-1239584816.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-20435672\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/GettyImages-1239584816-1024x681-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"990\" height=\"658\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>A worker, wearing a protective gear, guards the entrance to a neighborhood in lockdown as a measure against the Covid-19 coronavirus, in Jing\u2019an district, in Shanghai on March 29, 2022. overseas, almost no one would still prefer major lockdowns and strict measures until the virus is wiped out,\u201d immunologist Zhuang Shilihe is quoted as saying.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Global Times<\/em> call for alternatives to the Communist Party\u2019s approach to lockdowns preceded a full-throated defense of Chinese policy in the\u00a0<em>People\u2019s Daily<\/em> on Tuesday, the official newspaper of the Party.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cChina is in a leading position globally in economic development and pandemic control,\u201d the <em>People\u2019s Daily<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.people.cn\/n3\/2022\/0329\/c90000-10077234.html\">proclaimed<\/a>, \u201cwhich fully demonstrates the strong ability of the country to control the virus and the obvious advantages of the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the socialism with Chinese characteristics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The propaganda newspaper condemned American outlets and observers for questioning total lockdowns as a reasonable approach to the years-long pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChina\u2019s pandemic control practices fully prove that the \u2018dynamic zero-COVID approach\u2019 is science-based, necessary, effective and feasible,\u201d the <em>People\u2019s Daily<\/em> claimed. \u201cIt is something that must be done by a major country with more than 1.4 billion people, as well as an obligation of a responsible government and society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, the\u00a0<em>People\u2019s Daily<\/em> claimed that any concern from the West for the ongoing outbreak in Hong Kong \u2013 which resulted in Beijing-controlled officials separating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2022\/02\/24\/hong-kong-separating-parents-from-infants-over-coronavirus\/\">infants<\/a> from their parents to impose quarantine \u2013 was \u201cnarrow and evil.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt turns the pandemic into a tool and weapon out of ulterior political motives,\u201d the outlet concluded. \u201cThe unscientific, unequal, and irresponsible pandemic response led by the White House, prejudices held by political parties, as well as the reckless dissemination of fake information have traumatized the credibility of the U.S. government, and the rights to life and health of Americans, whose trust in their government has been \u2018bankrupt.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Follow Frances Martel on\u00a0<a
