A mob of woke employees.<\/p>\n<p>The victim? The company\u2019s CEO Bob Chapek.<\/p>\n<p>And if the mob isn\u2019t stopped, the rest of America will soon be hostages, too.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the reality of what\u2019s happening at the company \u201cwhere dreams come true.\u201d It started a few weeks ago when Chapek actually did something rather centrist \u2013 and sensible. He refused to let The Walt Disney Company take a stance after Florida passed a bill which, among other things,<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/floridas-controversial-dont-gay-bill-inside-proposed-law\/story?id=83525901\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\"> prevented the teaching of sexual orientation and gender identity to children <\/a>ages 5 to 8 years old. As he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/disney-ceo-bob-chapek-florida-dont-say-gay-bill-response-1235105879\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\">said at the time<\/a>, such corporate statements \u201care often weaponized by one side or the other to further divide and inflame,\u201d so restraint was the best course.<\/p>\n<p>There was a time, not long ago, when everyone knew that was a reasonable response. Disney is a corporation, not a campaign. Its business is <em>business<\/em>, not politics. But that\u2019s not how the woke mindset works. It views everything as inherently political \u2013 and it demands that everyone pick sides on every issue.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why the woke mob took Bob Chapek hostage. Disney executives have attacked their employer on social media and employees<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/22\/business\/media\/disney-florida-employee-protests.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\"> staged a nationwide walk out.<\/a>. Yet rather than stand his ground \u2013 and hold Disney to its corporate purpose \u2013 the CEO allowed himself to be captured.<\/p>\n<p>Now, he\u2019s doing the woke mob\u2019s bidding. He\u2019s abased himself before his employees, apologizing profusely, and he\u2019s taking Disney in the wrong direction. He\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/disney-ceo-forms-task-force-promises-listening-tour-response-lgbtq-concerns-2022-03-22\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\"> launched<\/a> a task force and listening tour, promised to use Disney\u2019s market power to oppose similar laws, and donated<a href=\"https:\/\/www.benzinga.com\/general\/entertainment\/22\/03\/26069267\/disney-ceo-bob-chapek-switches-gears-to-publicly-criticize-floridas-dont-say-gay-legislatio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\"> $5 million of the company\u2019s money to an activist group<\/a>\u00a0that refused the donation until the company took \u201cmeaningful action\u201d on the Florida bill.<\/p>\n<p>In less than a month, Disney has gone from not taking sides to waging the culture war. It\u2019s now<a href=\"https:\/\/www1.cbn.com\/cbnnews\/entertainment\/2022\/march\/report-disney-plans-to-fight-texas-order-that-labels-sex-reassignment-surgeries-on-kids-as-child-abuse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\"> fighting the state of Texas<\/a>, which is also trying to protect young children.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, Disney is far from alone. Virtually every company in the Fortune 500 \u2013 and countless others \u2013 have been cowed by employees into becoming political pawns. From the corporate pulpit, they\u2019re preaching about everything from abortion to climate change to \u201cvoting rights,\u201d largely because they fear what employees will do if they don\u2019t. Never mind that virtually none of this political virtue signaling has anything to do with these firms\u2019 core business interests.<\/p>\n<p>To be clear: Companies aren\u2019t responding to the demands of all their employees, or even most of them. They\u2019re just giving in to the loudest voices. At Disney, employees are<a href=\"https:\/\/wdwnt.com\/2022\/03\/disney-employees-passing-around-petition-in-favor-of-a-politically-neutral-disney-amidst-dont-say-gay-bill-controversy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\"> passing around a petition<\/a> asking the company to stay neutral in the Florida fight. They want their employer to focus on doing what it\u2019s supposed to do. But they\u2019re being ignored and drowned out.<\/p>\n<p>Business leaders think that by giving in, the woke mob will give up. But they couldn\u2019t be more wrong. In the same way that you shouldn\u2019t negotiate with terrorists, you shouldn\u2019t cave to the mob. If you give \u2018em an inch, they\u2019ll take a mile, and continue to make increasingly radical demands.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s especially frightening at a company like Disney, which sells stories and ideas to America\u2019s children. You can bet the woke mob wants to fill our sons\u2019 and daughters\u2019 heads with all kinds of insane and dangerous things. And now they think they can get Disney to do it.<\/p>\n<p>Where does it end? Cultural conquest. The mob won\u2019t rest until every company colludes with the government to fundamentally alter American society. At that point, there truly will be no distinction between the private and public sectors. They will be one and the same, and they will force the American people to think and act the same, too<\/p>\n<p>But it doesn\u2019t have to be this way. And it wouldn\u2019t be this way if more CEOs showed some moral backbone.<\/p>\n<p>Every business leader and employee is entitled to their own opinions and should have the freedom to share them publicly \u2014 I personally do quite often. But it crosses a line to speak for all of one\u2019s employees by throwing a company\u2019s full weight behind a political cause with no connection to its corporate mission. Keeping out of the ideological fray respects employees\u2019 diverse views and reinforces a company\u2019s role as a private business, not a political tool. It will take courage, yes. But America and the freedoms we enjoy were not built on cowardice.<\/p>\n<p>Are there any companies left that understand this basic truth? Absolutely. You don\u2019t hear about them \u2013 and that\u2019s the point. They go about their work without wading into the most contentious issues, and as I can attest, it\u2019s better for the business. While some employees undoubtedly dislike it, the overwhelming majority like working at a place where they can make a difference in society without feeling pressured or silenced into submission. They know that business is meant to serve people, not the political whims of a select few.<\/p>\n<p>America\u2019s biggest companies need to remember that fact. Every business should realize that politics is none of their business. We don\u2019t need more companies to become hostages to the woke mob.
