The operation changes, objected to by Republicans who <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/05\/29\/140-republican-lawmakers-pile-onto-lawsuit-against-democrats-over-proxy-voting-file-injunctions-on-new-proxy-votes\/\">launched a lawsuit<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/08\/07\/house-republicans-pledge-to-appeal-judges-dismissal-of-proxy-voting-case\/\">appealed<\/a> a court ruling to challenge their legitimacy, were <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/05\/28\/house-democrats-take-advantage-of-new-proxy-voting-rules-to-attend-space-launch\/\">quickly exploited<\/a> by Democrats to spend chamber time campaigning or indulge in other works of self-promotion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am unable to physically attend proceedings in the House Chamber due to the ongoing public health emergency,\u201d explained Florida Democrat Rep. Charlie Crist in a letter to the House clerk days after rule changes went into effect delegating another Florida lawmaker to vote in his place.<\/p>\n<p>Crist attended a SpaceX launch in his home state with fellow Florida Democrat Rep. Darren Soto on the <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/dozens-congress-vote-remotely-critics-slam-covid-policy\/story?id=81252850\">same day<\/a>. Soto also voted by proxy. <\/p>\n<p>In February, California Democrat Rep. Ro Khanna used proxy voting rules to allow him do an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/inquirer-live\/ro-khanna-dignity-in-a-digital-age-20220124.html\">online interview<\/a> about his book from his car in the Capitol parking lot. <\/p>\n<p>Other Democrats voted by proxy last year so they could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/04\/20\/politics\/house-proxy-voting-minnesota-protests\/index.html\">attend<\/a> Minneapolis protests after the trial of former police officer Derek Chauvin, who was <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/04\/20\/derek-chauvin-found-guilty-on-all-counts-in-george-floyds-death\/\">convicted <\/a>in the murder of George Floyd.  <\/p>\n<p>On one vote in May last year, New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez <a href=\"https:\/\/clerk.house.gov\/Votes\/2021156?RollCallNum=156\">voted<\/a> \u201cpresent\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/clerk.house.gov\/legislative\/proxy-letters\/117\/1\/votes\/2021\/roll156.pdf\">by proxy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Pelosi\u2019s proxy rules will now remain in place until May 14, when the speaker may reinstate them for another 45-day period. The original rules established proxy voting may be authorized for 45-days at a time granted the House sergeant-at-arms and the Capitol physician maintain a public health emergency still exists from COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>In February, the Capitol physician <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/capitol-relaxes-mask-guidance-933931d2-4e49-4e2c-8d2b-b667ef1e47b3.html\">dropped<\/a> the congressional mask mandate days ahead of President Joe Biden\u2019s State of the Union address.<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy, a frequent critic of proxy voting rules since they were proposed, has vowed to eliminate the ability of members to vote by proxy if Republicans reclaim the majority. In January, the Supreme Court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/01\/24\/supreme-court-proxy-voting-house-00001243\">refused<\/a> to take up a challenge that the rules were unconstitutional.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is insulting that while Americans are expected to show up to work \u2014 including those who never stopped working through the pandemic \u2014 House Democrats insist on granting themselves a permanent pass to stay home, but still want to get paid,\u201d McCarthy told The Federalist. \u201cIt\u2019s well past time for the People\u2019s House to return to its mission of serving the people, and that must begin by showing up for work.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Tristan Justice is the western correspondent for The Federalist.
