The Ukrainian president <\/span><span>discussed<\/span><span> topics such as alleged efforts to assassinate him, Russia\u2019s attack on the port city of Mariupol, and Russia\u2019s influence over Ukrainian politics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cOur security service is in charge of that. They eliminate those who come here on a hunting mission. I\u2019ve got nothing else to say,\u201d was Zelensky\u2019s brief comment on the subject of alleged assassination attempts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Zelensky was dismissive of the leadership in the breakaway \u201cindependent republics\u201d Russia created by fiat in eastern Ukraine, describing them as puppets of Moscow. He lamented that Russian leaders \u201cdo not recognize the autonomy of Ukraine.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe\u2019re a state with a rich history and moral code. I think we\u2019re now showing the truth of the situation,\u201d he said. The president expressed his concern for future generations in Ukraine, as the <em>Moscow Times<\/em> reported:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>Sadly, I do not think [Russian President Vladimir] Putin\u2019s plans are strategic. Strategy is about what will happen to a country in a hundred years. I\u2019m in no position to give advice to the Russians, but that\u2019s what I call strategy. What will happen in five generations? Where will we be? I\u2019m interested in what is going to happen to Ukraine, as a citizen, as a father. My children will live here\u2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Putin has a different approach. He is focused on today. I think it is a mistake. But not only his mistake. It is also a mistake of his entourage. The party was great, but who\u2019s going to clean the mess?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>During the interview, journalist Mikhail Zygar <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/meduza.io\/en\/feature\/2022\/03\/28\/it-s-not-just-a-war-it-s-much-worse\"><span>asked<\/span><\/a><span> a question forwarded by Dmitry Muratov, the Nobel Prize-winning editor-in-chief of newspaper <\/span><i><span>Novaya Gazeta. <\/span><\/i><span>On Monday, the paper <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/russias-novaya-gazeta-newspaper-pauses-activities-after-official-warning-2022-03-28\/\"><span>announced<\/span><\/a><span> it would suspend publication, both in print and online, under pressure from Roskomnadzor. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Muratov held out hope that the publication could resume once the war in Ukraine ends. <\/span><i><span>Novaya Gazeta <\/span><\/i><span>has been in publication since the fall of the Soviet Union.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThere is no other choice. For us, and I know, for you, it\u2019s an awful and difficult decision,\u201d Muratov said in a note to readers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In early March, the Russian parliament <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2022\/03\/04\/russia-punish-ukraine-war-fake-news-up-15-years-prison\/\"><span>warned<\/span><\/a><span> that \u201cspreading fake news about the Russian armed forces and the military operation in Ukraine,\u201d as the <em>Moscow Times<\/em> summarized the bill, could be punished with up to 15 years in prison.
