They were identified as presumably trans men who retained a uterus. No disparities emerged among those 498 fathers, whose births represented just 0.034 percent of the total studied,\u201d the <em>San Francisco Chronicle<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/health\/article\/Two-mother-couples-risk-more-birth-complications-17029959.php?sid=5d54065e91d15c7b08162233&#038;utm_source=newsletter&#038;utm_medium=email&#038;utm_content=headlines&#038;utm_campaign=sfc_morningfix\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe disparities faced by people who were mothers in partnership with a mother were striking,\u201d Stephanie Leonard, a Stanford instructor and lead author of the study, which was published on Monday in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, said.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Chronicle<\/em> reported on the complications lesbian couples experienced disproportionately, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>8 percent of lesbian couples had multiple fetuses versus 1.5 percent male\/female couples.<\/li>\n<li>19 percent of lesbians required induced labor versus 13 percent of male\/female couples.<\/li>\n<li>8.6 percent of lesbian couples experienced hemorrhaging, or bleeding profusely, after giving birth, versus 4.4 percent of male\/female couples.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <em>Chronicle<\/em> report included speculation that the problems could be related to the stress of being a lesbian.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Dr. Juno Obedin-Maliver, the study\u2019s senior author and an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Stanford Medicine, said that he believes the greater health problems in this group of mothers are a result of the negative effects of \u201cstigma and discrimination\u201d on health.<\/p>\n<p>He cited \u201cweddings, parenting magazines, and breast-feeding classes\u201d as example of ways lesbian pairs may not feel represented, suggesting these are all designed with traditional couples in mind.<\/p>\n<p>The report said that the disparity in outcomes could not be attributed to socioeconomic factors, and even after ruling out differences in education, insurance, age, pre-existing health conditions and other factors, the researchers found \u201cmother\/mother partners\u201d had more complications than mother\/father couples.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Stanford study was made possible, researchers said, by a California law that altered birth certificates by no longer requiring \u201cmother\u201d and \u201cfather,\u201d and switched to \u201cparent giving birth\u201d and \u201cparent not giving birth.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>On the new state forms, each parent \u201ccan indicate whether they identify as a mother or father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Follow Penny Starr on <a
