Heather Wilhelm-Routenberg and Robin (Robbie) Routenberg-Wilhelm explicitly requested that they have a baby daughter after undergoing fertility treatments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>However, the couple was devastated to find out they were expecting a son. Now they are responding with legal action against the fertility clinic, claiming Heather \u201cbecame suicidal\u201d after her son\u2019s birth and entered a \u201cdark depression\u201d upon finding out she was carrying a baby boy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Upon first finding out the child was male at her 15 week appointment, Heather said she became convinced the IVF clinic mixed up the embryos and she was actually carrying someone else\u2019s baby.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI looked at Robbie and said, \u2018What\u2019s if it\u2019s not yours \u2014 who is in my body?!\u2019 That\u2019s when I flipped out, that\u2019s when I felt my body was taken hostage,\u201d Heather told Amy Klein at the post. \u201cI assumed it was someone else\u2019s embryo, not the wrong embryo of ours.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt scared the s*** out of me. I don\u2019t know how to explain this \u2014 it felt like there was an alien living inside of me,\u201d she continued. \u201cI said to Robbie, \u201cIf this is someone else\u2019s kid, we will have to give it back.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Heather went on to say her OB offered to abort the child, but she declined in part because she was, \u201choping beyond hope someone would have our baby and we would switch after birth and it would be this happy story.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe scheduled an ultrasound for the next day,\u201d Heather said. \u201cThat was the worst night of my life. I had this overwhelming sense of immobility. I remember lying in my bedroom, thinking, \u2018This can\u2019t be happening!\u2019 Not only was the baby in my body not ours, but the baby in my body was male and he was put there against my will, just like rape.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Heather explained how she specifically chose CNY fertility clinic because they were willing to ensure the baby was a girl. She had been sexually assaulted on two occasions, making her leery of men in general. Plus, she did not want to raise a boy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe didn\u2019t want to have a boy because of the assaults and because of the socialization of boys \u2014 there\u2019s constant socialization of what it means to be a \u2018real man,\u2019\u201d Heather told Klein. \u201cPeople say, \u2018Oh, he\u2019s a boy, let him hit you,\u2019 and all the camouflage and guns don\u2019t help. It reinforces masculinity, and that\u2019s a reminder of the assaults every time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Buffalo resident went on to describe how she spent seven weeks waiting to find out if the unborn baby was related to Robbie genetically (they had selected to use Robbie\u2019s eggs and have Heather be the carrier).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cDuring that time, I had no connection to the baby inside \u2014 I figured I would be giving it away to its real parents. I tried not to think about being pregnant,\u201d she recalled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Eventually, the results revealed that the baby was Robbie\u2019s, and he was a boy. Heather was \u201cfurious\u201d at the news. She said it was \u201cisolating\u201d being so unhappy and not having friends and family understand her position.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThat was the most isolating thing \u2014 that we had a healthy baby, but I had no emotional connection and now I had to wrap my head around having a child forever that I wasn\u2019t planning on,\u201d Heather told the Post.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe whole pregnancy, I couldn\u2019t connect to the baby. I hate saying that. It\u2019s painful. It was a terrible experience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After the baby boy was born, Heather claimed she was unable to bond with him.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI started experiencing extreme anxiety. I would look at the baby and it would contort into the faces of all these grown men that I know,\u201d Heather said. \u201cIt was so creepy. Whenever that happened, I had to give the baby to Robbie.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>She continued, \u201cI literally thought I was going insane. There were several incidences of suicidal ideation, some of which were very dangerous. I had complex postpartum depression.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Now the couple\u2019s son is one and a half. Heather admitted she has grown to appreciate the boy since he was born. \u201cHe\u2019s a lovely kid,\u201d she said. \u201cHe smiles just like Robbie, he has Robbie\u2019s dimples, and that makes it easier\u2026he\u2019s been an easy baby.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>However, the two moms say they have to work harder raising him because they didn\u2019t get the daughter they requested from the fertility clinic. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cEven though I don\u2019t have Heather\u2019s trauma and re-traumatization, it was also hard for me to connect,\u201d Robbie said of the child. \u201cIt\u2019s not only about the in-utero and birth experience, it\u2019s about the socialization that a boy has in the world \u2014 even while we fight against these social norms, this repeated narrative of forced masculinity \u2014 and we did not sign up for that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe both love our child but we have had to work harder than anyone should have to work to make sure we are all alive,\u201d she added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Enter for the chance to hang out with Gina Carano at the premiere of her new Daily Wire movie, Terror on the Prairie!
