The video has nothing to do with the invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) estimates that up to 40,000 Russian soldiers have been killed, wounded, taken prisoner or are missing in Ukraine since the outset of the war, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/livecoverage\/russia-ukraine-latest-news-2022-03-23\/card\/russia-lost-up-to-40-000-troops-in-ukraine-nato-estimates-xyZjWxinMDHzdeRZvAeD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a>. A video shared on Facebook claims to show a graveyard in Russia where hundreds of plots have been dug to bury those killed in the conflict.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHundreds of graves have been dug in the cemeteries of Russia \u2013 they are waiting for the burial of Russian cargo 200, which is starting to come from Ukraine,\u201d the post\u2019s caption claims, adding that the rate of Russian soldiers dying in Ukraine was \u201ca thousand a day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The video predates the invasion of Ukraine. A reverse image search revealed the footage circulated on Twitter in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/opvolo\/status\/1446818625881522185\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">October 2021<\/a>, months before the invasion began. <a href=\"https:\/\/sitv-ru.translate.goog\/arhiv\/news\/zachem-stolko-mogil-direktor-kladbishha-v-surgute-prokommentiroval-skandalnoe-video\/?_x_tr_sl=ru&#038;_x_tr_tl=en&#038;_x_tr_hl=en&#038;_x_tr_pto=sc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Russian media outlets<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/muksun.fm\/news\/society\/03-03-2022\/video-mogil-v-surgute-stalo-chastyu-feyka-ukrainskogo-blogera\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a> on it in 2021, explaining it shows a graveyard in Surgut, Russia. The staff of the graveyard told <a href=\"https:\/\/muksun.fm\/news\/society\/03-03-2022\/video-mogil-v-surgute-stalo-chastyu-feyka-ukrainskogo-blogera\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Russian<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/sitv-ru.translate.goog\/arhiv\/news\/zachem-stolko-mogil-direktor-kladbishha-v-surgute-prokommentiroval-skandalnoe-video\/?_x_tr_sl=ru&#038;_x_tr_tl=en&#038;_x_tr_hl=en&#038;_x_tr_pto=sc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">media<\/a> outlets the graves were being pre-dug ahead of winter when the ground would freeze making it difficult to dig.<\/p>\n<p>The mayor of Surgut, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tellerreport.com\/news\/2021-02-27-%0A---deputy-andrey-filatov-elected-as-mayor-of-surgut%0A--.ByunqJFvfu.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andrey Filatov<\/a>, also debunked the rumor in a March 7 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CazC5WgjNVg\/?utm_source=ig_embed&#038;ig_rid=05fafbdb-8344-4dcd-b462-4d4fec9c0f4d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Instagram<\/a> post, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/factcheck-russia-surgut\/fact-check-video-of-pre-dug-graves-in-russia-is-from-2021-depicts-routine-practice-before-winter-idUSL2N2VS1KY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reuters<\/a>. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2022\/03\/08\/fact-check-russian-ambassador-united-nations-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Did The Russian Ambassador To The UN Say That Donald Trump Was Overthrown?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt that time, the graves were being prepared for winter,\u201d said Filatov. \u201cThis is a standard procedure for earthworks in northern cities. Due to the fact that we have rather low temperatures in winter, all work of this specific nature is carried out in advance.
