Biden is already providing military aid and advice to Ukraine\u2019s forces, including long-range missiles that have killed many Russians.<\/p>\n<p>His statement was greeted with dismay by Richard Haass, the head of the elite Council on Foreign Affairs.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">\u201cThe comments by <\/span><span class=\"r-18u37iz\">@potus\u00a0<\/span>made a difficult situation more difficult and a dangerous situation more dangerous,\u201d Haass tweeted March 26, adding:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>That is obvious. It\u2019s up to the Russian people,\u201d Secretary of State Tony Blinken later <a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/us-has-no-strategy-regime-change-russia-blinken-says-2022-03-27\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">said<\/a>\u00a0at a press event in Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>On Sunday night, Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2022\/03\/27\/walking-back-joe-biden-now-says-he-was-not-calling-regime-change-russia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> reporters in Washington, DC, that he was not calling for regime change.<\/p>\n<p>But the risk of escalation towards nuclear war was compounded by Ukraine, which announced its opposition to any territorial compromise.<\/p>\n<p>Russia launched the war, in part, to separate two majority-Russian provinces, and the Crimean peninsula, from Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no independent republics on the territory of Ukraine \u2026 Russia illegally occupied Crimea and part of Donetsk and Luhansk,\u201d the Ukrainian ambassador to the United States <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/meet-the-press\/video\/ukrainian-ambassador-we-re-grateful-u-s-is-taking-refugees-but-let-s-focus-on-stopping-the-war-136334405938\">said<\/a> March 27 on NBC\u2019s <em>Meet the Press<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we shouldn\u2019t ask Ukraine what we are ready to give up in order for Russia to stop this aggression,\u201d the ambassador said.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine allies in Washington cheered Biden\u2019s threat against Putin.<\/p>\n<p>Alexander Vindman, a Ukrainian immigrant and former White House official who helped precipitate the Democrats\u2019 2020 impeachment of former President Donald Trump, said Biden\u2019s speech was \u201chistorical,\u201d like \u201cKennedy\u2019s Berlin Speech.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This was an historical speech for <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/POTUS?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@POTUS<\/a>.
