\/><\/div>\n<p class=\"subheading\">The British government has claimed they will give free speech a \u201ctrump card\u201d status in an effort to combat woke cancel culture, despite the fact it is currently legislating to increase censorship online.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab warned on Friday that free speech in Britain is being \u201cwhittled away\u201d by \u201cwokery and political correctness\u201d and claimed the government has plans to replace former Labour prime minister Tony Blair\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislation.gov.uk\/ukpga\/1998\/42\/contents\">Human Rights Act<\/a> with a\u00a0British Bill of Rights \u2014 a promise the Tories have been making, but not keeping, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2006\/jun\/26\/uk.humanrights\">for over 15 years<\/a> at least.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>Raab has promised that the new Bill will help counter \u201ccancel culture\u201d and prevent the \u201cparameters of free speech being narrowed\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He did not indicate that the government will be rolling back the country\u2019s multifarious hate speech laws or the fact that people can be prosecuted for being \u201cgrossly offensive\u201d, however.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Indeed, it is possible the bill may be more oriented towards protecting the rights of the press to report about individuals\u2019 private lives without repercussions than the rights of ordinary citizens, judging by a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-10653643\/Free-speech-legal-supremacy-Dominic-Raab-unveils-plan-stop-democratic-debate.html\">friendly report<\/a>\u00a0in <em>The Daily Mail<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The debate over an individual\u2019s privacy vs press freedom recently resurfaced after Meghan, Duchess of Sussex,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2022\/01\/05\/meghan-markle-is-awarded-1-from-daily-mail-lawsuit\/\">successfully sued<\/a> the <em>Mail on Sunday\u00a0<\/em>for publishing a letter she had sent to her father, Thomas Markle, in August 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, Raab has admitted that the supposedly free speech oriented bill will actually clamp down on certain speech, citing \u201cthose who try and use either media or free speech to incite violence, to radicalise terrorists, or to threaten children\u201d \u2014 likely not the whole story, given such things are already illegal \u2014 even as he adamantly proclaimed that the government would \u201cstrengthen free speech, the liberty that guards all of our other freedoms, and stop it being whittled away surreptitiously, sometimes without us really being conscious of it\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEffectively, free speech will be given what will amount to \u201ctrump card\u201d status in a whole range of areas,\u201d Raab free speech, which does not really exist in the American sense in Britain, is very much at odds with the government\u2019s new Online Safety Bill, which will require social media companies to remove\u00a0content that is lawful but could be interpreted as \u201charmful\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Social media sites, already far from shy about banning predominantly conservative and right-leaning users, up to including a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/tech\/2021\/01\/08\/twitter-permanently-bans-president-donald-trump\/\">sitting U.S. President<\/a>,\u00a0 are likely to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2022\/03\/18\/uk-online-safety-law-could-massively-restrict-freedom-of-speech-press\/\">overzealous<\/a> in enforcing the Online Safety Bill as they will face heavy fines \u2014 up to 10 per cent of their global annual turnover \u2014 and possible prison time for executives if they fail to remove prohibited content.<\/p>\n<p>Media and Culture Secretary\u00a0Nadine Dorries has attempted to frame the Online Safety Bill as a measure to prevent \u201cunelected\u201d Silicon Valley executives from being the \u201csupreme arbiters\u201d of discourse online \u2014 however it does not appear to do anything to prevent tech companies from banning users, censoring their content, or limiting their reach, but instead simply pressures them to
