REUTERS\/Johanna Geron<\/div>\n<p>March 27, 2022<\/p>\n<p>PARIS (Reuters) \u2013 French President Emmanuel Macron called for restraint in both words and actions in dealing with the Ukraine conflict, after U.S. President Joe Biden described Russian President Vladimir Putin as a \u201cbutcher\u201d and said he should not remain in power.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wouldn\u2019t use this type of wording because I continue to hold discussions with President Putin,\u201d Macron said on France 3 TV channel.<\/p>\n<p>Biden, speaking in Warsaw, had said that Putin \u201ccannot remain in power\u201d. A White House official later said Biden\u2019s remarks did not represent a shift in Washington\u2019s policy and were meant to prepare the world\u2019s democracies for an extended conflict, not back regime change in Russia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to stop the war that Russia has launched in Ukraine without escalation \u2014 that\u2019s the objective,\u201d Macron said on France 3 TV, noting the objective was to obtain a cease fire and the withdrawal of troops through diplomatic means.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf this is what we want to do, we should not escalate things \u2014 neither with words nor actions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The French president on Friday had said he was seeking to hold more talks with President Putin in the coming days regarding the situation in Ukraine as well as an initiative to help people leave the besieged city of Mariupol.<\/p>\n<p>President Putin sent his troops into Ukraine on what he calls a \u201cspecial military operation\u201d to\u00a0demilitarise\u00a0and \u201cdenazify\u201d Ukraine. Ukraine and the West say Putin launched an unprovoked war of aggression.<\/p>\n<p>Far-right French presidential candidate Marine Le Pen said she backed Macron\u2019s approach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously, those are words that add oil to the fire,\u201d she said, when asked about Biden\u2019s comment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fact that the president of the Republic is not entering into this escalation is a good thing,\u201d she said, speaking on France 3 in a pre-recorded interview that was broadcast on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>(Reporting by Elizabeth Pineau and Mimosa Spencer.
