We\u2019ll make an offer and hear what he has to say in response and then it will be pencils down before Opening Day.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Later on Saturday, Judge spoke <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/03\/23\/yankees-aaron-judge-talks-could-easily-get-personal\/\">as if he would be willing to take the talks beyond Opening Day<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m pretty sure,\u2019\u2019 Judge said of the April 7 deadline. \u201cIf there are negotiations [after Opening Day], I won\u2019t be talking to you guys [the media] about it at all. We haven\u2019t decided yet, but for right now, that\u2019s what we\u2019ve got.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The outfielder has become the face of the Yankees and the most popular player on the team as he heads into what could be his final year before free agency and a long-term extension either on the table or close to it. I think all parties hope it\u2019s an extension, clearly. That\u2019s not anything that anyone can promise.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cashman noted Judge\u2019s comments from Wednesday, when the outfielder said <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/03\/23\/yankees-have-short-window-for-aaron-judge-contract-extension\/\">he wasn\u2019t going to deal with a potential distraction<\/a> of negotiations once the season gets underway.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe communicated that to you [the media],\u2019\u2019 Cashman said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>Asked if that deadline was communicated directly to the team, as well, Cashman said: \u201cI don\u2019t know if I can say that. It doesn\u2019t matter. Whatever he said through you guys, I\u2019ll take at face value.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And he says he\u2019s prepared for any outcome.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are two parties involved in this and Aaron [said] that he wants this part of things to end before Opening Day,\u201d Cashman said. \u201cIt\u2019s either resolved and out of the way, or the opposite way and we do one year [in arbitration] and play it out. \u2026 I can reassure you conversations will take place before Opening Day one way or another and we\u2019ll know where we stand when the dust settles.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The last time the Yankees went through with an arbitration hearing was in 2016, when they offered Dellin Betances $3 million and the reliever countered with a request for $5 million. The fight became ugly \u2014 and public.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think our position has always been that we wind up in a hearing only if we\u2019re dragged there,\u2019\u2019 Cashman said. \u201cThat\u2019s our position. We don\u2019t handle arbitration where we\u2019re trying to get over on anybody. We go only when we\u2019re forced to go. It\u2019s not something like we\u2019re afraid of going, but our history shows we stay out of that arena unless compelled to get there. That\u2019s fine, too. We\u2019ll go back and forth and maybe settle on something before the court date and if not, we\u2019ll see each other in court.\u2019\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Judge is still hoping to avoid that scenario with a long-term deal after the Yankees submitted an arbitration number of $17 million and his camp countered with $21 million.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to be here,\u2019\u2019 Judge said. \u201cAny way we can lock that up and I can play quite a few more years here, that would be great. If it happens, it happens. If it doesn\u2019t, I\u2019m not too worried.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He insisted the uncertainty isn\u2019t affecting him on the field.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a baseball player,\u2019\u2019 Judge said. \u201cI\u2019m gonna come in here and do what I need to do on the field.
