Ron DeSantis signed a bill Friday requiring schools to be transparent with parents about instructional reading materials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Florida, our parents have every right to be involved in their child\u2019s education,\u201d DeSantis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flgov.com\/2022\/03\/25\/governor-ron-desantis-signs-bill-that-requires-curriculum-transparency\/\">said in a statement<\/a>. \u201cWe are not going to let politicians deny parents the right to know what is being taught in our schools. That&#8217;s how it&#8217;s going to be in the state of Florida.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/nLgzqtwMjD\">pic.twitter.com\/nLgzqtwMjD<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 American Principles \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\uddf8 (@approject) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/approject\/status\/1507413578181140481?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 25, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The bill comes in \u201cthe Year of the Parent,\u201d the governor\u2019s office said in a press release, noting that the legislation is focused on empowering parents to make decisions about what their children are exposed to.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation, which also sets 12-year term limits for school board members, requires schools to \u201cnotice\u201d and keep meetings on the selection of school instructional materials open to the public.<\/p>\n<p>School districts must provide parents with access to all the proposed materials at least 20 days before the school board takes official action, according to the bill, and the state Department of Education (DOE) must publish a list of the removed or discontinued materials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSchool district library media center materials and assigned school or grade-level reading lists must also be reviewed by a district employee holding a valid educational media specialist certificate and require DOE to develop an online training program for librarians and media specialists,\u201d the governor\u2019s office said in a press release.<\/p>\n<p>The press release notes that the superintendent of schools in every district will be required to certify to the DOE commissioner that media center specialists and school librarians have taken the training.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile teachers, school administrators, and school board members have a tremendous amount of authority over what and how our kids are taught in school, at the end of the day, parents \u2014 not schools \u2014\u00a0are responsible for raising children,\u201d Senate President Wilton Simpson said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFlorida parents are seeking greater involvement in many aspects of our education system, and this legislation speaks to that effort,\u201d he added. \u201cThe books our kids are reading in schools need to have proper vetting. Parents have a right, and a responsibility, to be involved in that process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Florida\u2019s House Speaker Chris Sprowls promised that the legislation would \u201cimprove accountability, curriculum transparency and trust,\u201d noting that the addition of term limits helps to \u201cweaken any political motives and shifts the focus of school boards back to the best interests of our children, as it should be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One parent said in a statement provided by the governor\u2019s office that she had recently discovered a \u201cpornographic\u201d book in her child\u2019s high school in Orange County, Florida.<\/p>\n<p>The parent was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/books-containing-pedophilia-graphic-sex-depictions-have-been-pulled-from-fairfax-schools\">referring to books like<\/a> \u201cGender Queer\u201d by Maia Kobabe and \u201cLawn Boy\u201d by Jonathan Evison, which were both removed from Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) in Virginia after a parent dramatically read graphic passages aloud during a school board meeting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter some research, I learned that an alarming percentage of high school and middle school library books contain similar material,\u201d parent Alicia Farrant said in a statement. \u201cIt is appalling that removal of pornographic and sexually explicit books has even been cause for debate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am thankful for a Governor that has the courage to lead with integrity and to partner with parents as we strive to raise the standard of excellence in our education system,\u201d she added. \u201cOur students deserve to have high quality, academically rich books at their fingertips and under no circumstance should they have access to graphic, pornographic material at school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest growing conservative media companies for breaking news, investigative reporting, sports, podcasts, in-depth analysis, books, and entertainment for a reason: because we believe in what we do.
