Kera Birkeland, the sponsor of the bill, told The Daily Wire on Friday. \u201cWe have seen the necessity of such legislation play out recently and I am proud to stand up and fight for girls to have the opportunity to compete on an even playing field.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood policy is made by considering a variety of viewpoints and working to find the right solution,\u201d she added. \u201cOver the past two years, I have made every effort to find a balanced and reasonable solution to a tough and divisive issue, and am convinced Utah has taken the right step forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The state\u2019s bill pertaining to \u201cstudent eligibility in interscholastic activities\u201d bans students \u201cof the male sex from competing against another school on a team designated for female students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>HB 11 defines sex as \u201cthe biological, physical condition of being male or female, determined by an individual\u2019s genetics and anatomy at birth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cox had vetoed the legislation, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/sports-health-legislature-utah-youth-sports-0661f935c914181b2e75b24c46506f68\">talking<\/a> of a \u201ccommission of political appointees\u201d that could \u201ccreate criteria and evaluate transgender student-athletes\u2019 physical characteristics and how they compare to \u2018baseline ranges\u2019 for their age and gender.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the state legislature quickly overrode his veto in less than 30 minutes on Friday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/2022\/03\/utah-legislature-overrides-governors-veto-on-womens-sports-bill\/\">National Review reported<\/a>, and the law is set to go into effect on July 1.<\/p>\n<p>In a 2021 meeting with Birkeland, Utah Jazz owner Ryan Smith and Utah Jazz president Jim Olson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/video\/jazz-owner-utah-legislature-transgender-bill-nba-all-star-game-044745098.html?guccounter=1&#038;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&#038;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAEUhqpEIlJESWFq75zPn7SxuiefovhzKCzVgJ2FqjRqgm2dhKRrjQlZm3mXMsBuFsJOUDYmS2UuUE8-lrnDU6xc696eZCTRPIrcdo8dv2a1wGWRvWkgnAfX3yQvNTZQiUBvQfPKt9zDHmAChX5f6LAIcLhs6XTF7ExEKnh4WqJSe\">had reportedly expressed fears<\/a>\u00a0that an earlier version of the bill would cost the state the 2023 NBA All-Star Game.<\/p>\n<p>The Utah Jazz officials also reportedly discussed the potential that the bill would impact whether Salt Lake City got to host the 2030 or 2034 Winter Olympics.\u00a0Utah Jazz has not responded to a number of requests for comment from The Daily Wire.<\/p>\n<p>Birkeland told The Daily Wire in an interview earlier this month that she \u201cdefinitely\u201d has reason to believe that outside groups pressured Cox to veto the bill out of concerns like the NBA All Star href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/njhochman\/status\/1507427692018376705?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 25, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI just want them to know that it\u2019s gonna be okay,\u201d Utah Governor Spencer Cox <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/sports-gender-identity-utah-youth-sports-20cbbe668532d686e2b3c0a1ff46c807\">said<\/a> in early March of transgender students when he vowed to veto the bill. \u201cWe\u2019re gonna work through this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Utah governor, who has not responded to many requests for comment from The Daily Wire, also apparently removed his pronouns from his Instagram bio as the legislature overrode his veto.<\/p>\n<p>Cox is one of only a few Republican governors to veto similar legislation.<\/p>\n<p>In April 2021,\u00a0Republican Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson vetoed a bill banning transgender surgeries and procedures for minors (though the state overrode his veto and passed the bill) and\u00a0Republican South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/03\/19\/kristi-noem-wavers-biological-males-womens-sports-bill\/\">drew heavy criticism<\/a> from conservatives in March 2021 for failing to certify a bill banning biological males from women\u2019s sports.<\/p>\n<p>Noem <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/02\/03\/kristi-noem-trans-athletes-womens-sports\/\">signed a different bill<\/a> in February mandating that educational institutions assign students to teams based on biological sex.<\/p>\n<p>The governor, who has strongly pushed back on criticism of her actions,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2022\/01\/28\/noem-biden-shouldnt-base-supreme-court-pick-on-race-gender\/\">told The Daily Signal<\/a> in February that the original bill was \u201cdeeply flawed\u201d and would have ended up in court.<\/p>\n<p>At least 29 states in the U.S. have made moves to craft or pass legislation banning biological males from women\u2019s sports, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/legislation-affecting-lgbtq-rights-across-country\">according to data compiled<\/a> by the American Civil Liberties Union.<\/p>\n<p>Other Republican-backed legislation <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/12\/here-are-the-states-that-want-to-ban-trans-surgeries-for-minors\/\">bans minors<\/a> from obtaining transgender surgeries and hormones \u2014 medical interventions that advocates and many in the legacy media <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/14\/walt-heyer-lgbtQ-transgender\/\">frame<\/a> as \u201cgender-affirming medical care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During the State of the Union address in early March, President Joe Biden urged lawmakers to enact the radically progressive Equality Act, criticizing the \u201conslaught of state laws targeting transgender Americans and their families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs I said last year, especially to our younger transgender Americans, I\u2019ll always have your back as your president so
