Spencer Cox\u2019s veto that would have eliminated protections for girls\u2019 sports. <\/p>\n<p>The monumental vote came on Friday when the Republican-controlled House voted 56-18 to override Cox\u2019s deciding power and the Senate agreed 21-8. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/utah\/2022\/3\/25\/22996277\/you-belong-salt-lake-city-leaders-tell-utah-transgender-youth-veto-override-lgbt-politics-sports-ban\">Eight<\/a> GOP state legislators who previously did not support the bill voted to nullify Cox\u2019s dissent. <\/p>\n<p>The final legislation, which passed both the House and the Senate earlier this month, barred \u201cstudent[s] of the male sex\u201d from encroaching on female sports and defined that sex \u201cdetermined by an individual\u2019s genetics and anatomy at birth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cox, who\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/04\/16\/utah-governor-defends-racism-as-long-as-its-against-white-kids\/\">defended racism as long as it\u2019s against white kids<\/a> justified vetoing the protections for girls\u2019 sports after claiming that he wanted to \u201cerr on the side of kindness, mercy, and compassion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am not an expert on transgenderism. I struggle to understand so much of it and the science is conflicting,\u201d Cox\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovCox\/status\/1506357829350821888?s=20&#038;t=2Abep4ikoDML6sLFubIzAQ\">wrote<\/a>\u00a0in his veto justification. <\/p>\n<p>Cox had also claimed earlier this month that last-minute revisions to the bill by the legislature designed to make it stronger contained \u201cfundamental flaws.\u201d Republican leadership in the House and Senate rejected these claims and quickly called for a veto override session to correct Cox\u2019s veto.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must work to preserve the integrity of women\u2019s sports and ensure it remains fair and safe for all. \u2026 Creating a safe and fair environment for athletes takes work. We care deeply for all students, but we can not ignore the scientific facts that biological boys are built differently than girls. Doing nothing is taking a step backward for women. Finding a solution to this complicated issue is necessary to maintain fair competition now and in the future,\u201d Senate President J. Stuart Adams <a href=\"https:\/\/senate.utah.gov\/utah-legislature-to-hold-a-veto-override-session\/?utm_source=rss&#038;utm_medium=rss&#038;utm_campaign=utah-legislature-to-hold-a-veto-override-session\">said<\/a> in a statement. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cGovernor Cox made his intention to veto the bill clear from the day it was passed so his action today was expected,\u201d Speaker Brad Wilson declared. \u201cMembers of the Legislature, including the sponsor, have worked tirelessly for more than a year to find the best way to approach a complex issue and I anticipate that we will have sufficient votes to override the veto. Ultimately, the Legislature recognizes the value of girls athletics and our members want to ensure girls have the level playing field to compete that was created by Title IX.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Despite the veto override and severe pushback from the state legislature which debunked his claims about the \u201cscience\u201d of transgenderism, Cox is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/utah\/2022\/3\/25\/22996277\/you-belong-salt-lake-city-leaders-tell-utah-transgender-youth-veto-override-lgbt-politics-sports-ban\">still trying<\/a> to doom women to playing sports with men who masquerade as women by calling a special legislative session to workshop the bill further. <\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Jordan Boyd is a staff writer at The Federalist and co-producer of The Federalist Radio Hour.
