The Jan. 6 Committee, however, is operating with no legitimate legislative purpose, lacks any minority-appointed lawmakers, and is operating without a ranking member. The only Republicans serving on Pelosi\u2019s Select Committee are Reps. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., and Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., both of whom were hand-picked by the speaker. Pelosi notoriously barred GOP appointments from Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/nancy-pelosi-vetoes-republicans-january-6-committee-11626904913\">blowing up her own committee<\/a>. In Wyoming, the state party <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/11\/16\/wyoming-gop-no-longer-recognizes-liz-cheney-as-a-republican\/\">no longer recognizes<\/a> Cheney as Republican. The Republican National Committee censured Cheney for her obsessive work on behalf of Pelosi. She <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MZHemingway\/status\/1506603940502294530\">laughed about her alienation<\/a> from Republican voters earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p>The Jan. 6 Committee\u2019s claims to be above the law as it executes a \u201cdigital Watergate\u201d demanding supporter data from the National Republican Senate Committee (NRSC) conjures memories of former President Richard Nixon\u2019s insistence that \u201cwhen the president does it, that means it is not illegal.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Five decades apart, the two cases of political warfare are different only by way of method and ability to conduct illegal opposition research openly.<\/p>\n<p>In 1972, a team of political operatives broke into the Watergate complex to steal confidential strategic information from the DNC. When the operation became public, the scandal led to the first and only resignation in presidential history. <\/p>\n<p>In 2022, Democrats on the Jan. 6 Committee, who\u2019ve <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/03\/19\/democrats-admit-jan-6-committee-is-all-about-midterms\/\">admitted the partisan probe is all about the midterms<\/a>, are seeking confidential strategic information from Republicans in the form of a subpoena issued under <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/11\/10\/j6-committee-misleading-witnesses-about-republican-staff-presence\/\">questionable authority<\/a>. The subpoena targets Republican financial records housed with the database firm Salesforce, requiring the party to hand over detailed personal information about Republican supporters and their engagement with the party. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat the Salesforce subpoena demands is for the company to hand over the \u2018Holy Grail\u2019 of the RNC\u2019s internal digital playbook,\u201d the NRSC wrote in an <a href=\"https:\/\/prod-static.gop.com\/media\/documents\/NRSC_Amicus_1648140640.pdf\">amicus brief<\/a> to the RNC lawsuit, with millions spent to compile its treasure trove of data. The NRSC calls the Jan. 6 Committee\u2019s operation a \u201cdigital-age Watergate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the Jan. 6 Committee claimed in its opposition memo the subpoena is \u201cnarrowly tailored,\u201d its compliance would require the Republican Party to reveal its digital strategy and identification of its supporters to ideological state actors running the partisan probe with an explicit vengeance. The committee has already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/interactive\/2022\/texting-insurrection\/\">selectively leaked<\/a> private communications obtained through its subpoenas to smear dissidents to friendly media while <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/12\/15\/breaking-january-6-committee-admits-it-doctored-text-message-between-meadows-and-jordan\/\">manipulating<\/a> other texts to promote a political narrative. <\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Tristan Justice is the western correspondent for The Federalist.
