Arafura Resources will use its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.proactiveinvestors.com.au\/companies\/news\/976851\/arafura-resources-awarded-30-million-under-federal-government-s-modern-manufacturing-initiative-976851.html\"><span>$30 million grant<\/span><\/a><span> to build a rare-earths separation plant at its Nolans Project in the Northern Territory.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arultd.com\/projects\/nolans.html\"><span>Nolans Project<\/span><\/a><span>, located about 85 miles north of Alice Springs, boasts one of the world\u2019s largest deposits of phosphate-uranium-thorium, located in an accessible area that can be developed with modest environmental impact \u2013 although local regulators and environmental activists have expressed some concerns about the size of the 4.8 gigaliter groundwater license required for the project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The separation plant under construction by Arafura will be only the second of its type to be located outside China.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Arafura managing director Gavin Lockyer told Australia\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/rural\/2022-03-24\/rare-earths-arafura-resources-separation-plant-planned-for-nt\/100934430\"><span>ABC News<\/span><\/a><span> on Wednesday that the separation plant is \u201cwhere all the real value-add is done to our product.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>\u201cYou\u2019ve only got to look at the geopolitical situation at the moment, where, globally, companies are trying to diversify supply chains. The world has been wholly reliant on one supplier,\u201d Lockyer pointed out, referring to China.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe wind is behind us in terms of geopolitical activity at the moment. Around the globe customers are looking to diversify their supply chains, we fit right into that space,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The minerals produced by the Nolans Project will be useful in building electric cars, wind turbines, and solar panels. One of the top customers will be South Korea, whose government <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.proactiveinvestors.com.au\/companies\/news\/975233\/arafura-resources-signs-agreement-with-korean-government-agency-to-open-rare-earths-export-market-975233.html\"><span>signed<\/span><\/a><span> agreements with Arafura in February to help develop the project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Arafura chairman Mark Southey called the agreement with South Korea \u201canother milestone that indicates the global significance of Nolans, and international interest in the project\u2019s capacity to provide a reliable, secure supply of what is a critical product.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-03-15\/australia-plans-rare-earths-boost-to-challenge-china-dominance\"><span>announced<\/span><\/a><span> several other grants for rare-earths refining last week, including projects to refine nickel, manganese, cobalt, and vanadium for batteries and power grids.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThese projects are not only game-changers for the local region with the creation of new jobs, they will also open up incredible export opportunities,\u201d said Australian Industry, Energy, and Emissions Reduction Minister Angus Taylor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>U.S. companies are also working on rare-earths projects, including a promising find at the La Paz Rare Earths Project in Arizona.
