She wishes more black women won after she did in 2002.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe can\u2019t always judge success or progress by how many awards we have,\u201d Berry said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAwards are the icing on the cake \u2014 they\u2019re your peers saying you were exceptionally excellent this year,\u201d she told the NYT. \u201cBut does that mean that if we don\u2019t get the exceptionally excellent nod, that we were not great, and we\u2019re not successful, and we\u2019re not changing the world with our art, and our opportunities aren\u2019t growing?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Last year\u2019s Academy Awards included two black women nominated for their performances, though neither won the coveted prize. Viola Davis was up for the Best Actress award for \u201cMa Rainey\u2019s Black Bottom,\u201d plus Andra Day was nominated for \u201cThe United States vs. Billie Holiday.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Critics are upset that the 2022 show does not have any black women nominated for Best Actress. The Academy Awards are scheduled for Sunday, March 27.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Elsewhere in her 2002 Oscars acceptance speech, Berry said, \u201cThis moment is so much bigger than me. This moment is for Dorothy Dandridge, Lena Horne, Diahann Carroll. It\u2019s for the women that stand beside me, Jada Pinkett, Angela Bassett, Vivica Fox. And it\u2019s for every nameless, faceless woman of color that now has a chance because this door tonight has been opened.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>She told the NYT the night is still a blur in her memory. \u201cI don\u2019t have any memory of it,\u201d she said. \u201cI don\u2019t even know how I got up there. It was totally a blackout moment.
