Prior to the invasion, Russian leader Vladimir Putin recognised the two eastern Ukrainian regions as independent.<\/p>\n<p>Though Russia launched a multi-pronged invasion on the 25th of March, some Western officials have said that Putin may abandon his efforts to take Kyiv (Kiev) and on the other fronts in the west of Ukraine in order to consolidate the Russian Armed Forces efforts in the Donbas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think what\u2019s clear is that the original Russian plan of being able to have three separate [axes] of manoeuvre, operate them all simultaneously, and achieve their objectives quickly has been frustrated. So whilst we\u2019ll see continued bombardment of key cities, I think it likely that we\u2019ll see a concentration of manoeuvre operations in the east,\u201d a Western official <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/is-russia-or-ukraine-winning-the-war-a-month-on-2dbdpkxhm\">told<\/a> <em>The Times of London<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>British intelligence has also claimed that there is a \u201crealistic\u201d situation in which Russian soldiers \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2022\/03\/25\/uk-defence-intelligence-faltering-russian-forces-may-be-surrounded-by-ukrainians-near-kyiv\/\">facing considerable supply and morale issues<\/a>\u201d might be encircled and potentially routed by Ukrainian forces surrounding Kyiv.<\/p>\n<p>It is currently unclear exactly how many Russian soldiers have died during the invasion, though a NATO official has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/ukraine-crisis-demoralised-russian-troops-could-be-encircled-in-areas-near-kyiv-mod-says-lkw7lt5zt\">claimed<\/a> that the death toll likely stands between 7,000 and 15,000, with up to 40,000 either captured, missing, wounded, or killed.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Russia, for its part, has only officially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rferl.org\/a\/komsomolskaya-pravda-soldier-deaths\/31764466.html\">admitted<\/a> to 498 deaths. However, on Sunday, a pro-Kremlin paper <em>Komsomolskaya Pravda<\/em> published a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2022\/03\/22\/pro-kremlin-paper-claims-was-hacked-posting-alleged-russian-death-toll-ukraine\/\">quickly deleted article<\/a> on its website claiming that 9,861 Russian soldiers have died so far. The paper went on to assert that it was hacked. Ukrainian state media has claimed that around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukrinform.net\/rubric-ato\/3436686-russias-losses-update-15300-personnel-509-tanks.html\">15,300<\/a> Russians have been killed in the fighting.<\/p>\n<p>Reports have also <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2022\/03\/21\/russia-generals-dead-ukraine\/\">indicated<\/a> that as many as 20 Russian generals have died in the field \u2014 however, this figure is unconfirmed and widely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/alexei-sharov-russia-ukraine-kyiv-mariupol-general-putin-death-1690834\">disputed<\/a>, with Putin only <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/ukraine-war-who-are-the-dead-russian-military-officers-and-what-do-their-deaths-tell-us-about-russias-operation-12566775\">admitting<\/a> to the death of one general to date.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">UK Defence Intelligence: Faltering Russian Forces May Be Surrounded by Ukrainians Near Kyiv <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/kl9AtUoEy8\">https:\/\/t.co\/kl9AtUoEy8<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Breitbart London (@BreitbartLondon) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BreitbartLondon\/status\/1507270986659418115?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 25, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Despite this, the Russian military maintains a significant advantage over Ukrainian forces in manpower, weapons, and military vehicles, with Ukraine reportedly being entirely dependent on shipments of arms from foreign powers to maintain the fight now \u2014 so a prolonged war may turn to Russia\u2019s benefit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRussia retains, in overall terms, significant materiel and personnel reserves that it can draw upon,\u201d a Western source <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/mar\/23\/military-supplies-depleted-on-both-sides-but-russia-retains-advantage\">told<\/a> <em>The Guardian<\/em>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p><em>The Washington Post<\/em> has also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2022\/03\/23\/makariv-propaganda-ukraine\/\">reported<\/a> that \u201creality doesn\u2019t match [Ukrainian] government boasts of victory\u201d in the Kyiv suburb of Makariv, for example, claiming that Ukrainian forces in the supposedly recaptured city continue to be \u201cunder constant shelling of enemy artillery\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Yet perhaps potentially more concerning for Putin may be the defection of one of his prominent advisors this week, Anatoly Chubais.<\/p>\n<p>Chubais, who previously served as a key figure in the privatization of the Russian economy following the fall of the communist Soviet Union under Boris Yeltsin, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-03-23\/putin-adviser-chubais-quits-over-ukraine-war-and-leaves-russia\">reported<\/a> by Bloomberg to have resigned and fled the country to Turkey over his \u201copposition to President Vladimir Putin\u2019s war in Ukraine\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Though the former deputy prime minister was not involved in military affairs \u2014 most recently serving as Moscow\u2019s international climate envoy \u2014 the move marks the highest-profile defection during the war to date.<\/p>\n<p>Confirming the defection, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitri Peskov <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/mar\/23\/putin-adviser-anatoly-chubais-quits-leaves-russia-invasion-ukraine\">said<\/a>: \u201cYes. Chubais has resigned voluntarily.
