On Thursday night, two more top seeds stumbled, with Gonzaga \u2014 the tournament\u2019s number one overall seed \u2014 and Arizona, both going down in the Sweet 16.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For a record-tying fifth time, the Gonzaga Bulldogs entered the tournament as a one-seed and failed to win a title, losing to Arkansas 74-68 Thursday night. The normally high-powered Gonzaga offense \u2014 87.2 points per game \u2014 was held in check by a stifling Arkansas defense, shooting 37.5% from the floor and making just five of 21 shots from beyond the arc.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe just wanted to be physical, plain and simple,\u201d Arkansas head coach Eric Musselman <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mens-college-basketball\/story\/_\/id\/33588787\/arkansas-razorbacks-take-no-1-gonzaga-make-elite-eight-ncaa-tournament\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cWe wanted them to feel bodies. Obviously they played a really tough schedule early in the season, but it\u2019s been a long time in conference play since they faced a team like us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cCan\u2019t compliment these guys and the entire team enough for the way that they buy in to game preparation. It\u2019s probably the coolest thing I\u2019ve ever been a part of that they just kind of do what we ask.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It\u2019s the second straight Elite Eight appearance for Arkansas, with a matchup against Duke on Saturday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe\u2019ve been disrespected the whole year, so it\u2019s just another thing for us,\u201d sophomore forward Jaylin Williams <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mens-college-basketball\/recap?gameId=401408625\">said<\/a> after notching a double-double. \u201cWe saw everything they were saying, we felt like they were dancing before the game. That was disrespect for us. We just came into the game playing hard and we had a chip on our shoulder. Every game we do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Arkansas was led by senior guard JD Notae, who had 21 points in the game on 9-29 shooting, throwing in six assists, six rebounds, and three steals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In San Antonio, one-seed Arizona was outclassed and outworked from the opening tip, losing to Houston 72-60. The Wildcats never led in the game, as Houston\u2019s swarming defense held Arizona\u2019s stars in check. Bennedict Mathurin scored just 15 points on 4-14 shooting after putting up 30 on TCU in the second round, Christian Koloko had just 10 points following his 28-point outburst in the round of 32, and Azuolas Tubelis was a complete no-show, adding two points on 0-8 shooting from the floor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cYou\u2019re better served if you play them a couple times,\u201d Arizona head coach Tommy Lloyd <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mens-college-basketball\/story\/_\/id\/33590306\/houston-cougars-elite-eight-upset-no-1-arizona-wildcats\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> after the game. \u201cThey do the things they\u2019re good at at such a high level. It\u2019s hard to get comfortable the first time around. You can try to tell your guys what\u2019s coming, but they actually have a lot better feel for it actually having experienced it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Cougars will play Villanova in the Elite Eight for a chance to head to back-to-back Final Fours. Houston was third in the country in points allowed per game during the regular season (59.0 ppg) and locked down the high-powered Arizona offense.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe key to beating Arizona is controlling the pace,\u201d Houston head coach Kelvin Sampson <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mens-college-basketball\/story\/_\/id\/33590306\/houston-cougars-elite-eight-upset-no-1-arizona-wildcats\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cWe\u2019re going to win a game in the 60s. But we\u2019re not going to win a game in the 80s.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cVictories don\u2019t come with asterisks. It\u2019s not a beauty contest,\u201d Sampson <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mens-college-basketball\/story\/_\/id\/33590306\/houston-cougars-elite-eight-upset-no-1-arizona-wildcats\"><span>added<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cI watched Arizona play. I watched them play UCLA. I watched them play Colorado. I watched the way those teams guarded them, and I knew we weren\u2019t going to guard them like those teams did. Those teams just switched them. They let them be comfortable. We were going to make them uncomfortable.
