A national poll of adults conducted last week by the respected pollster Ann Selzer placed him as low <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grinnell.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/docs\/2022-03\/FOR%20THE%20WEBSITE%20with%20branding%20v2%20Selzer%20Co%20GCNP%202249%20Methodology%20Document%203-21-2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as 34 percent<\/a>. If the election were held today, a generic Republican would clean his clock.<\/p>\n<p>But the party base remains enamored of a less generic Republican, and that guy doesn\u2019t do as well:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-conversation=\"none\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Biden holds a two point lead in a potential rematch with Trump among the likely electorate. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/2XIyoSPtdx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pic.twitter.com\/2XIyoSPtdx<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Echelon Insights (@EchelonInsights) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EchelonInsights\/status\/1506716941813116928?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">March 23, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>High inflation, record-setting gas prices, the real chance of a world war erupting in Ukraine \u2014 and Biden is still mildly preferred to Trump. A weary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2022\/03\/24\/gop-move-beyond-trump-2024-00019988\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rich Lowry<\/a>, fresh off the chaos of yesterday\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/hotair.com\/allahpundit\/2022\/03\/23\/mo-brooks-turns-on-trump-he-pushed-me-to-rescind-the-2020-results-remove-biden-and-reinstate-him-as-president-n457542\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">un-endorsement of Mo Brooks<\/a>, pleads with his party to do better next time: \u201cRepublicans could have their pick of a plethora of alternatives in 2024 who don\u2019t personalize everything, who don\u2019t create a haze of chaos and melodrama around everything they do, who don\u2019t routinely turn on people who work for them, who don\u2019t put their interest in vengeance over the interests of the party, and who don\u2019t carry more baggage than the underbelly of an Airbus A380-800.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If Republicans nominate Trump a third time in 2024 and end up losing to an unpopular 82-year-old incumbent when there are candidates like Ron DeSantis and Glenn Youngkin sitting on the sidelines, it\u2019ll be the biggest own-goal in modern American political history.<\/p>\n<p>Reporters at today\u2019s NATO summit asked Biden about the possibility. I should only be so lucky, he told them:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Biden is asked about &#8220;widespread concerns&#8221; that Trump might be elected again, and whether there is anything he and NATO are doing to prevent anything Biden is trying to do from becoming undone. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/jGWfpLr6sV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pic.twitter.com\/jGWfpLr6sV<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 The Post Millennial (@TPostMillennial) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TPostMillennial\/status\/1507054375084122114?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">March 24, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Even if we do get a second Trump term, the silver lining in the dark cloud over Ukraine is that \u2014 I think \u2014 NATO is now Trump-proof, especially if Germany keeps its promise to spend more than two percent of GDP on defense going forward. Americans\u2019 support for Zelensky and antipathy towards Putin is now so great that I doubt Trump would have the stones to blow up our military alliance with Europe, even though he was reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/trump-nato-south-korea-book-b1883457.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">planning to do it<\/a> if he had won reelection in 2020. Being soft on Russia is a much greater liability for an American politician than it was six months ago, even on the right. U.S. participation in NATO is here to stay, no matter who wins next time.<\/p>\n<p>Which is not to say Trump wouldn\u2019t have handled a Russian attack on Ukraine differently. He was asked about it recently and responded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/2022\/03\/donald-trump-russia-nuclear-submarines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this way<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI listened to [Putin] constantly using the N-word, that\u2019s the N-word, and he\u2019s constantly using it: the nuclear word,\u201d Trump said describing his talks with the Russian leader, while absolutely bizarrely suggesting \u201cthe N-word\u201d refers to \u201cnuclear.\u201d \u201cWe say, \u2019Oh, he\u2019s a nuclear power.\u2019 But we\u2019re a greater nuclear power. We have the greatest submarines in the world, the most powerful machines ever built\u2026. You should say, \u2018Look, if you mention that word one more time, we\u2019re going to send them over and we\u2019ll be coasting back and forth, up and down your coast. You can\u2019t let this tragedy continue. You can\u2019t let these, these thousands of people die.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Nuclear brinksmanship with a possibly irrational Putin at a moment when the west is desperate to prevent the war in Ukraine from turning regional is certainly a take. I see no problem with two authoritarians obsessed with strength and saving face rattling nuclear sabers at each other in the middle of a hot war on Russia\u2019s border.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of musing about quitting NATO one minute and then threatening to nuke Russia the next, how about a nice middle-ground option in which we sanction Russia\u2019s economy into oblivion while supplying the Ukrainians with conventional weapons?<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of which, Biden got annoyed today when a reporter asked him why he believes sanctions might convince Putin to change course. I don\u2019t, he responded: \u201cSanctions never deter!\u201d Except \u2026 the White House repeatedly cited the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/politics\/five-times-the-white-house-said-sanctions-could-deter-putin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">possibility that sanctions would deter an invasion<\/a> before Russia attacked Ukraine.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Biden today on sanctions and deterrence:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did not say that in fact the sanctions would deter him. Think of them as a massive attack on Russian logistics to complement the many smaller attacks being launched by Ukrainian troops on Russian convoys. They\u2019re the most comprehensively devastating weapon used by either side in the war \u2014 so far.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll leave you with one more Biden soundbite from today. He wants Russia excluded from the next meeting of the G20, a symbolic punishment in keeping with the broader western campaign to signal that an imperialist Moscow is persona non grata internationally. And he rightly defers to Ukraine\u2019s government when asked what sort of territorial concessions Ukraine should be willing to make.
