She and her husband, former professional basketball player Dwyane Wade, have a teenager who identifies as trans. This has inspired Union to become an outspoken advocate for LGBT issues, especially as they relate to kids.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The \u201cCheaper By the Dozen\u201d actress recently expressed her thoughts during an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/terrycarter\/gabrielle-union-cheaper-by-the-dozen-disney-interview\"><span>interview<\/span><\/a><span> with Buzzfeed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s important for us to live and love out loud. We didn\u2019t exactly understand why [supporting Zaya\u2019s trans identity] was a thing because it\u2019s like, we love all our kids out loud,\u201d Union said. Their 14-year-old child Zaya came out as trans in 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBut it is a thing and a lot of people do need an example,\u201d she continued. \u201c[People] do need that [kind of] representation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAs our children show up, it is our job to believe them when they tell us who they are and not impose our dreams, hopes, fears, and desires on them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Next, Union insisted parents should \u201crespect\u201d whatever identities children choose for themselves, including gender identities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s our job to be loving, compassionate, protective guides for our children, but their lives are their lives and we have to respect that,\u201d Union explained. \u201cWe do not believe in any kind of shaming for existing. That is bizarre, cruel, [and] harmful.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSo yeah, we\u2019re gonna post our family, we\u2019re going to live out loud, we\u2019re going to love out loud, and we\u2019re going to speak out loud and lead in however each situation calls for us to be leaders when things are not where they should be,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The \u201cBring It On\u201d actress also had a message for trans kids.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThere are people just like you that want you to win in life. And by win, I mean to survive and thrive. And we will find a way,\u201d she said when asked what her \u201cmessage for trans kids living in Texas\u201d would be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe will not stop working for all of our freedom, our salvation, and our liberation \u2014 whether that\u2019s in Texas, Florida, Idaho, or all the other states that are basically trying to outlaw your existence, demonize and criminalize your parents for loving you. This will not stand. As long as I have air in my lungs, we will be fighting for you and I will not be alone and you are not alone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In 2020, Union said trans kids feel \u201cdisposable\u201d if their parents don\u2019t agree to gender transitions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI mean, to us, it\u2019s a little odd to get any kind of recognition for doing what, you know, you are supposed to do, which is love and accept and embrace your kids. So it\u2019s odd to get recognition for that,\u201d the actress <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/gabrielle-union-transgender-kids-feel-disposable-if-parents-dont-transition-them\">told Ellen DeGeneres<\/a> during an appearance on her show.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBut unfortunately there are so many people who just don\u2019t. They just don\u2019t. And so many people who really truly feel like their kids are disposable. If they\u2019re not perfect images of them, they aren\u2019t interested. And it\u2019s heartbreaking. So for us, we are just doing what\u2019s natural to us and loving her. There she is! There is our girl.
