Bill Lee (R-TN) proposed a pause to the state\u2019s grocery tax amid worsening inflation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The move comes two weeks after the Department of Labor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/inflation-soars-7-9-in-past-12-months-new-40-year-high\"><span>announced<\/span><\/a><span> that the consumer price inflation reached a 7.9% rate in February \u2014 a four-decade high. Lee argued that a 30-day pause on the state\u2019s 4% grocery tax would \u201cprovide direct financial relief\u201d to Tennesseans struggling with rising price levels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAs Americans see their cost-of-living skyrocket amid historic inflation, suspending the grocery tax is the most effective way to provide direct relief to every Tennessean,\u201d Lee said in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tn.gov\/governor\/news\/2022\/3\/24\/gov--lee-announces-30-day-grocery-tax-suspension.html\"><span>statement<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cOur state has the ability to put dollars back in the pockets of hardworking Tennesseans, and I thank members of the General Assembly for their continued partnership in maintaining our fiscally conservative approach.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Lee is including the proposal in a budget amendment for the next fiscal year, which will be delivered on March 29.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2022\/03\/09\/tennessee-90-day-gas-tax-moratorium\/9443375002\/\"><span>Tennessean<\/span><\/a><span> reported that the move comes after two Democratic state representatives called on Lee to pause the state\u2019s collection of gas taxes for 90 days for the \u201cbenefit of Tennessee\u2019s working families.\u201d Residents currently pay a gas tax slightly above $0.27.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Indeed, governors and lawmakers across the United States are considering measures to ease inflationary pressures weighing on their constituents.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) recently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/newsom-pushes-400-gas-price-relief-payments-as-california-fuel-prices-reach-record-levels\"><span>shared<\/span><\/a><span> details about his effort to send $400 to California residents for each registered vehicle. The $11 billion plan is meant to help with soaring fuel expenses in California, where the current average price is $5.88 per gallon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Newsom, however, pinned the blame on Russian President Vladimir Putin, failing to mention the role of the Biden administration in opposing the expansion of new energy projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe\u2019re taking immediate action to get money directly into the pockets of Californians who are facing higher gas prices as a direct result of Putin\u2019s invasion of Ukraine,\u201d Newsom said in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2022\/03\/23\/governor-newsom-proposes-11-billion-relief-package-for-californians-facing-higher-gas-prices\/\"><span>statement<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cBut this package is also focused on protecting people from volatile gas prices, and advancing clean transportation \u2014 providing three months of free public transportation, fast-tracking electric vehicle incentives and charging stations, and new funding for local biking and walking projects.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Gas prices \u2014 which have ripple effects upon nearly every facet of the American economy \u2014 are having a direct impact on groceries.
