Jack Reed<\/a>, the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, believes.<\/p>\n<p>The chairman warned during a Wednesday event with the Defense Writers Group that China is \u201cconstantly rethinking, reevaluating, readjusting\u201d its policy toward <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/taiwan\">Taiwan<\/a>, though he noted that Beijing is likely looking at Russia\u2019s stumbles and wondering if it would have the same fate in a future military conflict.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Enhancement\">\n<div class=\"Enhancement-item\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cChina is looking at Russia, too, and they\u2019re beginning to ask questions,\u201d Reed explained. \u201cI think the Chinese leadership also has the suspicion that their military has not been involved in a major combat since the Korean War \u2026 it has not been tested, and they might be getting second thoughts about, &#8216;How reliable will our forces be if we do that?'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><b><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/defense-national-security\/ukrainian-ambassador-to-us-accuses-russia-of-genocide-during-invasion\">UKRAINIAN AMBASSADOR TO US ACCUSES RUSSIA OF &#8216;GENOCIDE&#8217; DURING INVASION<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>The United States and Russia both <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/foreign\/botched-assessment-of-ukraines-will-to-fight-echoes-afghan-intel-failures\">underestimated<\/a> Ukraine&#8217;s military capabilities, which have not only kept Russian forces out of key cities but recaptured cities taken by Russians earlier in the conflict. Pentagon spokesman John Kirby noted on Tuesday that Russia has &#8220;not achieved any of the strategic objectives.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Chinese leaders are \u201cconstantly evaluating the response of the Pacific power \u2014 the United States, Australia, Japan, etc. \u2014 to their reaction,&#8221; the chairman continued. &#8220;So obviously, they are looking at this closely, and I think it will be a lesson that, I think it&#8217;s one that they will absorb and continue to have a significant focus on Taiwan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese have been placed in a difficult position, having released a communique with Russia that <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/defense-national-security\/china-and-russia-unveil-plan-for-new-world-order\">outlined a wide range of plans<\/a> for economic and diplomatic cooperation last month, while Russia has since become an international pariah. While China claims to promote &#8220;peace&#8221; between Russia and Ukraine, it has simultaneously been <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/china-plays-peacemaker-while-amplifying-russian-justifications-for-ukraine-war\">amplifying<\/a> Russian disinformation claims of justification.<\/p>\n<p><b><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve seen, basically, through statements, some at least tacit approval by the Chinese for what Russia was doing,\u201d Kirby said earlier this month. \u201cNow, in the last few days, some of their Foreign Ministry spokespeople have appeared to walk some of this back a little bit by talking about Ukrainian sovereignty, which is welcome to see. But we haven\u2019t seen China join the list of countries that have enacted sanctions on Russia. We haven\u2019t seen the Chinese blame Mr. Putin for the violence he is causing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/china-and-us-must-work-together-for-peace-in-ukraine-xi-tells-biden\">spoke<\/a><\/u> at length last week. The Chinese government\u2019s <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fmprc.gov.cn\/mfa_eng\/zxxx_662805\/202203\/t20220319_10653207.html\">readout<\/a><\/u> contained no criticism of Russia but claimed, \u201cChina stands for peace and opposes war.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese government maintains that Taiwan is a part of the mainland, while the Taiwanese claim independence and have their own government.
