Sasse (R-NE) called out the \u201cjackassery\u201d in the Senate moments after Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) questioned President Joe Biden\u2019s U.S. Supreme Court nominee, Ketanji Brown Jackson, about her soft sentences for child sex offenders.<\/p>\n<p>Sasse spoke about why cameras should not be allowed in the Supreme Court when he noted that \u201cthe jackassery we often see around [the U.S. Senate] is partly because of people looking for short term camera opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cTransparency is a good thing. I also believe that pen and pad can facilitate a whole heck of a lot of transparency just fine. And it\u2019s healthy for Americans to recognize the second and third and fourth order effects of cameras,\u201d Sasse\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CBSNews\/status\/1506726969160908805\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>. \u201cA huge part of why this institution doesn\u2019t work well is because we have cameras everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sasse\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CBSNews\/status\/1506726969160908805\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">added<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>There\u2019s a whole bunch of things that humans can do if they\u2019re not immediately mindful of some distant camera audience that they might be trying to create a sound bite for. And Instagram can be useful for some small things but for intellectual discourse, it is not a friend. Sasse (R-NE) says he believes it should be up to the Supreme Court to decide if cameras are allowed in the courtroom, adding:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we should recognize the jackassery we often see around here is partly because of people mugging for short-term camera opportunities.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/BxXaw1UX4D\">pic.twitter.com\/BxXaw1UX4D<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 CBS News (@CBSNews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CBSNews\/status\/1506726969160908805?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 23, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Sasse\u2019s comments came shortly after Cruz questioned Jackson about her soft sentences for child sex offenders and her thoughts on womanhood, leading some social media users to speculate whether Sasse\u2019s comments were about Cruz.<\/p>\n<p>One user\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/atrupar\/status\/1506721029149925382\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">asked<\/a>, \u201cDid Sasse just take a shot at the \u201cjackassery\u201d Ted Cruz and Lindsey Graham?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During his questioning of Jackson on Wednesday, Cruz presented a chart highlighting all eight of Jackson\u2019s child porn sentences and noted they deviated from federal sentencing guidelines and what government prosecutors recommended.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking about\u00a0<em>United States v. Chazin<\/em>, Cruz\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TPostMillennial\/status\/1506714045587542028\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">asked<\/a>\u00a0Jackson:<\/p>\n<p>In this case, you say comparable defendants are sentenced to 84 to 92 months. Sentencing Guidelines by statute require you to have similarly situated defendants sentence to similar sentences, but you don\u2019t sentence Chazin to 84 to 92 months. You sentenced him to 28 months. Why?<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Sen. Ted Cruz to Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson: &#8220;I&#8217;m trying to understand how you see someone that possesses images of infants and toddlers being sexually violated, and you sentence them to 64% below what the prosecutor is asking for.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/B02vMcd7VC\">pic.twitter.com\/B02vMcd7VC<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 The Post Millennial (@TPostMillennial) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TPostMillennial\/status\/1506714045587542028?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 23, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Jackson defended her lax sentencing of child sex offenders by saying that she has sentenced over 100 people, and Cruz was only focused on eight cases.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cSenator, no one case can stand in for a judge\u2019s entire sentencing record. I\u2019ve sentence more than 100 people. You have eight or nine cases in that chart,\u201d Jackson said.<\/p>\n<p>Cruz also asked Jackson about assessing womanhood in gender discrimination cases after she failed to define the word \u201cwoman\u201d when Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) asked her on Tuesday. Cruz\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RichardHanania\/status\/1506742473342676992\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>If I can change my gender if I can be a woman and then an hour later if I decide I\u2019m not a woman anymore, I guess I would lose Article Three standing. Tell me does that same principle apply to other protected characteristics? For example, I\u2019m an Hispanic man could could I decide I was an Asian man, what I have the ability to be an Asian man, and challenge Harvard\u2019s discrimination because I made that decision.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">It\u2019s not a troll when you expose the absurdity of your opponent\u2019s entire worldview. This is discrediting for elites. There was a time when they were able to hide behind obfuscation, it\u2019s become so absurd that no one is too stupid to see what is going on. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/lwnOnUf8B3\">pic.twitter.com\/lwnOnUf8B3<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Richard Hanania (@RichardHanania) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RichardHanania\/status\/1506742473342676992?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 23, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>As Cruz\u2019s allotted time concluded, he got into a back-and-forth with Senate Judiciary Chairman Dick Durbin (D-IL), who claimed Cruz was not allowing Jackson to answer the questions.<\/p>\n<p>Cruz, along with his Republican colleagues on the Senate Judiciary Committee, pushed for Jackson\u2019s pre-sentencing reports on her child sex offender cases in a signed\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mkraju\/status\/1506750407355338760\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a>\u00a0sent to Durbin on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Notably missing from the letter\u2019s signature block was Sasse\u2019s signature.
