When people arrived to view Klein\u2019s work, they were treated to nothing at all. He had showcased an invisible painting, yet it still gained fame and popularity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>More than 60 years later, a receipt for one of Klein\u2019s paintings of nothing is estimated to sell for 500,000 euros or $551,000, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/style\/article\/yves-klein-invisible-art-sothebys-auction\/index.html\"><span>CNN<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The receipt is for Klein\u2019s piece <\/span><span>\u201cZones of Immaterial Pictorial Sensibility,\u201d and only a few are believed to be in existence. It contains Klein\u2019s signature and is dated \u201cDecember 7, 1959,\u201d only a year after Klein first showed the world his unique \u201cart.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>CNN wrote, \u201c<\/span><span>Measuring less than 8 inches wide, the receipt grants ownership of one of Klein\u2019s imaginary spaces, which he dubbed a \u2018Zones of Immaterial Pictorial Sensibility.\u2019 Designed to resemble a banker\u2019s check, it is signed by the artist and dated to December 7, 1959.<\/span><span>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Some have drawn the strangely accurate comparison of Klein\u2019s receipts to NFTs, the highly-confusing digital good. \u201c<\/span><span>An NFT is a digital asset that represents real-world objects like art, music, in-game items and videos,\u201d Forbes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/advisor\/investing\/nft-non-fungible-token\/\"><span>explained<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cThey are bought and sold online, frequently with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/advisor\/investing\/what-is-cryptocurrency\/\"><span>cryptocurrency<\/span><\/a><span>, and they are generally encoded with the same underlying software as many cryptos.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Much like an NFT, the receipt gives the purchaser the seal of ownership over the work even if the owner doesn\u2019t physically possess the invisible art.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For someone to buy one of Klein\u2019s invisible works, a gold receipt given to the purchaser \u201chad to be burned in front of witnesses chosen by the artist, while the latter threw the same gold into the Seine [River],\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sothebys.com\/en\/buy\/auction\/2022\/collection-loic-malle-only-time-will-tell-2\/zone-de-sensibilite-picturale-immaterielle-serie\"><span>explained<\/span><\/a><span> Sotheby\u2019s. Three of these \u201ctransfer ceremonies\u201d took place before the buyer was officially the owner of an invisible painting. Klein \u201ckept a register of the successive owners\u201d of his works.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Sotheby\u2019s, capitalizing on the similarity of Klein\u2019s work to NFT\u2019s, announced they will accept cryptocurrency for the auctioning of the receipt. The person who ends up purchasing the receipt will also become an owner of \u201c<\/span><span>Zones of Immaterial Pictorial Sensibility,\u201d wrote Sotheby\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Not all of Klein\u2019s artwork were just blank sheets. His most famous work was of an artist jumping from a wall called \u201c<\/span><span>Leap into the Void.\u201d CNN reported, \u201c<\/span><span>Klein, who died in 1962, was a key figure in the nouveau r\u00e9alisme (new realism) movement, which used art to subvert viewers\u2019 perceptions of reality. In 1957, he opened an exhibition in Milan consisting of 11 blue canvases, identical in shape, shade and size.
