Version: 4.0.47--><div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dw-wp-production.imgix.net\/2022\/03\/GettyImages-1234979329.jpg?w=1200&#038;h=800&#038;ixlib=react-9.3.0\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Community colleges in California are considering adding diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) competencies to faculty evaluations.<\/p>\n<p>A proposal this month from California Community Colleges, the country\u2019s largest higher education system, would make\u00a0\u201cDEI competencies\u201d a formal condition for teachers to get promoted or receive tenure.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal adds an \u201cA\u201d for accessibility to DEI.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo embed DEIA competencies and criteria as a minimum standard for evaluating employees, the Chancellor\u2019s Office is proposing new regulatory language that makes DEIA-focused competencies and criteria a minimum standard and a system-wide requirement,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cccco.edu\/-\/media\/CCCCO-Website\/Office-of-General-Counsel\/45-day-notice-deia-eval-and-tenure-regulation-3-2022-a11y.pdf?la=en&#038;hash=1D7F6F28DE0C6CCD9AB1C1D1D0E7EE5105523F0D\">reads<\/a> the March 11 notice from the Chancellor\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to making DEIA competencies mandatory for employee evaluations, the new policies would also place \u201csignificant emphasis\u201d on DEIA competencies\u00a0in the tenure review processes, meaning it will influence decisions on whether an employee gets tenure, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cccco.edu\/-\/media\/CCCCO-Website\/Office-of-General-Counsel\/final-text-deia-eval-and-tenure-rev-reg-45-day-3-2022-a11y.pdf?la=en&#038;hash=7B552EC30DA94B9816943D000887332B9560D3A8\">proposal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The new policies would also require community college districts to include \u201cself-reflection\u201d as well as a \u201ccomprehensive evaluation from appropriate evaluators who reflect a range of perspectives on an employee\u2019s performance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe evaluation process shall provide employees an opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of DEIA and anti-racist principles, including how the employee has operationalized DEIA in the performance of their job responsibilities,\u201d the proposal reads.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal also says employees will be provided with professional development opportunities for DEIA competencies that will contribute to creating an \u201cinclusive campus and classroom culture\u201d and \u201cequitable student outcomes.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 3\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>The proposed DEIA competencies and criteria are a \u201cbaseline for districts and colleges to incorporate into their own local processes,\u201d according to the proposal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe DEIA competencies and criteria align with the system\u2019s ongoing initiatives and priorities, including upskilling all CCC employees with opportunities for continuous improvement and growth, and to support student success and retention by creating inclusive, anti-racist institutions, pedagogy, and curriculum that are reflective of the system\u2019s diverse student body,\u201d the notice from the Chancellor\u2019s Office reads. \u201cIt is well documented that all students benefit from diverse faculty, staff, curriculum, and learning environments leading to an increased sense of belonging, academic and personal validation, and retention.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Back in 2019, the community college system\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cccco.edu\/-\/media\/CCCCO-Website\/Files\/Communications\/vision-for-success\/5-dei-integration-plan.pdf?la=en&#038;hash=2402789D82435E8C3E70D3E9E3A8F30F5AB13F1D\">adopted<\/a> a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Integration Plan featuring a laundry list of ideas for how to incorporate DEI. One of the ideas reads,\u00a0\u201cEncourage diversity-focused criteria in employee evaluations and tenure review.\u201d This month\u2019s proposal would make that suggestion mandatory.<\/p>\n<p>The California Community Colleges education system is massive.
