For instance, a company may emphasize its use of green energy, association with LGBTQ suppliers, or otherwise arrange its operations such that producing shareholder value is inseparable from a leftist agenda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Elon Musk <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/elon-musk-condemns-rising-woke-trend-in-corporate-america\"><span>warned<\/span><\/a><span> just a few weeks ago that \u201cESG rules have been twisted into insanity.\u201d This year\u2019s ranking of the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/worldsmostethicalcompanies.com\/honorees\/\"><span>World\u2019s Most Ethical Companies<\/span><\/a><span>\u201d by Ethisphere \u2014 the \u201cglobal leader in defining and advancing the standards of ethical business practices that fuel corporate character\u201d \u2014 helps to explain why.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>With its \u201cdeep expertise in measuring and defining core ethics standards,\u201d Ethisphere identified 136 organizations that deserve our praise for their outstanding moral fiber. Many of these corporations <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/one-year-after-george-floyd-americas-biggest-corporations-earmark-37-billion-for-racial-equity\"><span>poured money<\/span><\/a><span> into \u201cracial equity\u201d initiatives following the death of George Floyd. Nevertheless, many also have ties to forced labor in Xinjiang, China \u2014 a world away from the eyes of woke Western consumers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u2018A State-Sponsored Labour Transfer Scheme\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>As pointed out by a February 2020 <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/ad-aspi.s3.ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com\/2021-10\/Uyghurs%20for%20sale%2020OCT21.pdf?VersionId=zlRFV8AtLg1ITtRpzBm7ZcfnHKm6Z0Ys\"><span>report<\/span><\/a><span> from the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI), the Chinese Communist Party has facilitated \u201ca state-sponsored labour transfer scheme\u201d of \u201cUyghur and other ethnic minority citizens from the far west region of Xinjiang to factories across the country.\u201d Living in segregated dormitories and forced to undergo ideological training outside of work hours, these Uyghurs \u2014 many of whom are Muslims \u2014 are forbidden from practicing their religion or otherwise expressing dissent with their government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Many former inmates of Uyghur detention camps have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2020\/7\/28\/21333345\/uighurs-china-internment-camps-forced-labor-xinjiang\"><span>experienced<\/span><\/a><span> torture and sexual abuse as part of their \u201cre-education\u201d process. One female survivor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/12\/18\/uyghur-women-recall-horrors-of-chinas-labor-camps\/\"><span>recalled<\/span><\/a><span> getting removed from the streets by law enforcement, enduring gang rape, and being forced to take sterilization pills. By several estimates, the Uyghur genocide is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/nov\/24\/china-cables-leak-no-escapes-reality-china-uighur-prison-camp\"><span>largest<\/span><\/a><span> mass imprisonment of a minority group since World War II.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Yet none of this seems to bother some of the Western world\u2019s most valuable \u2014 and most woke \u2014 companies. Indeed, ASPI\u2019s report identified 82 brands in the clothing, technology, and automotive sectors that benefit from Uyghurs\u2019 forced labor.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Apple<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span>Apple \u2014 a one-time honoree on the \u201cWorld\u2019s Most Ethical Companies\u201d list \u2014 has multiple firms in its supply chain that utilize forced labor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In 2017, Apple CEO Tim Cook visited supplier O-Film Technology and posted a picture of himself on an O-Film factory floor in Guangzhou, China. In a since-deleted press release, Cook praised O-Film for its \u201chumane approach towards employees,\u201d claiming that the workers seemed \u201cable to gain growth at the company, and live happily.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>However, ASPI points out that five months after Cook\u2019s visit, the Hotan government in Xinjiang contacted O-Film, hoping to supply another 1,300 workers. In December 2017, a Uyghur who claimed to have worked at O-Film said that there were more than a thousand Uyghur workers at the O-Film factory in Jiangxi.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Two years later, a local government document indicated that 560 Xinjiang laborers were transferred to work in factories in the Henan province \u2014 including Foxconn\u2019s Zhengzhou facility. The Zhengzhou plant makes half of the world\u2019s iPhones and has even earned Zhengzhou the nickname of \u201ciPhone city.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Beyond O-Film and Foxconn, Apple incorporated Dongguan Yidong Electronic Co. and Changji Esquel Textile Co. into its supply chain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Here in the United States, Apple <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/newsroom\/2021\/01\/apple-launches-major-new-racial-equity-and-justice-initiative-projects-to-challenge-systemic-racism-advance-racial-equity-nationwide\/\"><span>devoted<\/span><\/a><span> $100 million toward racial equity and justice initiatives \u201cto help dismantle systemic barriers to opportunity and combat injustices faced by communities of color.\u201d Cook proclaimed that \u201cwe are all accountable to the urgent work of building a more just, more equitable world\u201d in a manner consistent with \u201cthe values of equity and inclusion we have always prized at Apple.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Sony<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span>Sony \u2014 a four-time honoree on the \u201cWorld\u2019s Most Ethical Companies\u201d list \u2014 also procures many of its devices from Chinese facilities using Uyghur labor, including O-Film, Highbroad, Dongguan Yidong, and Foxconn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Japanese technology conglomerate <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sony.com\/en\/SonyInfo\/blog\/2021\/04\/15\/\"><span>professes<\/span><\/a><span> to believe in \u201cbuilding a culture that makes business and employee diversity a priority\u201d with diversity \u201cas one of our core values.\u201d With a $100 million global social justice fund, Sony has expressed concern with \u201cthe terrifying rise in hate crimes against the Asian American and Pacific Islander community across the United States.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida once noted that \u201cracial injustice is a global issue that affects us all\u201d and insisted that his company is \u201ccommitted to the human rights of all people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Dell<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span>Dell Technologies \u2014 a ten-time honoree on the \u201cWorld\u2019s Most Ethical Companies\u201d list \u2014 also procured from O-Film, Highbroad, and Foxconn, as well as Sichuan Mianyang Jingweida Technology Co.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In the summer of 2020, CEO Michael Dell <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/standing-strong-together-michael-dell\/\"><span>told<\/span><\/a><span> his employees that the death of George Floyd was \u201call too familiar\u201d for \u201cpeople of color in communities all over this country and around the world.\u201d He added that \u201cfor all the work we do within our own company, there will never be true justice or equality until we root out the rotten underbelly of racism that is eating away at the most cherished values we hold dear.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>General Motors<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span>General Motors \u2014 a three-time honoree on the \u201cWorld\u2019s Most Ethical Companies\u201d list \u2014 is also associated with O-Film and Dongguan Yidong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The automaker <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/plants.gm.com\/media\/us\/en\/gm\/news.detail.html\/content\/Pages\/news\/us\/en\/2020\/jun\/0605-support.html\"><span>designated<\/span><\/a><span> $10 million for donations to racial justice organizations in the summer of 2020. According to GM CEO Mary Barra, the funding was meant to help \u201croot out intolerance \u2014 and that means racism, bigotry, discrimination and any other form of hatred.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe want to be part of meaningful, deliberate change and we will not allow ourselves the passivity of urging others to act,\u201d she vowed. \u201cWe are taking action.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Microsoft<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span>Microsoft \u2014 a twelve-time honoree on the \u201cWorld\u2019s Most Ethical Companies\u201d list \u2014 has links to O-Film, Dongguan Yidong, and Foxconn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The technology company is in the middle of a five-year <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.microsoft.com\/blog\/2021\/06\/09\/our-annual-report-racial-equity-initiative-strengthening-our-communities\/\"><span>initiative<\/span><\/a><span> to strengthen African-American communities in the United States \u2014 complete with a $50 million commitment to police and prosecution reform. According to CEO Satya Nadella, \u201cseeing injustice in the world calls us all to take action, as individuals and as a company.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u2018Human Rights Due Diligence\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>The hypocrisy of multinational corporations willing to toss a few million dollars toward woke nonprofits in the United States while bankrolling ethnic cleansing abroad is quite apparent. Fortunately, many Americans are now taking notice \u2014 and lawmakers are taking action.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>President Joe Biden <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/biden-signs-uyghur-forced-labor-prevention-act-into-law\"><span>signed<\/span><\/a><span> the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act into law in December. Sponsored by Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR), the legislation stipulates that no goods made with slave labor from Uyghur Muslims in the Xinjiang province will make it to the United States. However, the legislation was passed despite a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/report-nike-lobbying-against-anti-china-bill-banning-import-of-products-made-by-forced-uyghur-labor\"><span>lobbying<\/span><\/a><span> push from firms like Nike, Coca-Cola, and \u201cWorld\u2019s Most Ethical Companies\u201d designee Apple.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>How should Western companies respond to their tainted supply chains?
