Mitt Romney (R-UT) reportedly believes it is \u201coff course\u201d for Republicans to attack Biden Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson for giving out lenient sentences to those in possession of child pornography.<\/p>\n<p>According to <em>Washington Post<\/em> congressional correspondent Paul Kane, Mitt Romney told him that claims about Ketanji Brown Jackson\u2019s record on child pornography sentencing will not affect his vote.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cRomney tells me that child-porn angle via Hawley\/Cruz is wrong, won\u2019t impact how he votes,\u201d said Kane. \u201c\u2018It struck me that it was off course, meaning the attacks were off course that came from some. Josh Hawley (R-MO) in a Twitter <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HawleyMO\/status\/1504221926662844418?s=20&#038;t=wS2v9YwAxdqeSzG57iPI-Q\">thread<\/a> last week when he reviewed her record going all the way back to college.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJudge Jackson has a pattern of letting child porn offenders off the hook for their appalling crimes, both as a judge and as a policymaker,\u201d he noted. \u201cShe\u2019s been advocating for it since law school. This goes beyond \u2018soft on crime.\u2019 I\u2019m concerned that this a record that endangers our children.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAs far back as her time in law school, Judge Jackson has questioned making convicts register as sex offenders \u2013 saying it leads to \u2018stigmatization and ostracism,&#8217;\u201d he added. \u201cShe\u2019s suggested public policy is driven by a \u2018climate of fear, hatred &#038; revenge\u2019 against sex offenders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When questioning Ketanji Jackson during the confirmation hearings, Hawley centered on one particular case in which she gave a person in possession of child pornography only three months in prison while refusing to label them a pedophile.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cYou said to him, \u2018This is a truly difficult situation. I appreciate that your family is in the audience. I feel so sorry for them and for you, and for the anguish this has caused all of you. I feel terrible about the collateral consequences of this conviction,&#8217;\u201d Hawley <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2022\/03\/22\/josh-hawley-grills-ketanji-brown-jackson-on-alleged-leniency-on-child-pornographers\/\">charged<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen. you said, \u2018Pedophiles are truly shunned in this society,\u2019\u201d he added. \u201cI\u2019m just trying to figure out, Judge, is he the victim here? Dick Durbin (D-IL), Ketanji said that she was following statutes set by congress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe statute [set by Congress] doesn\u2019t say \u2018impose the highest possible penalty for this sickening and egregious crime.\u2019 The statute says \u2018calculate the guidelines, but also look at various aspects of this offense and impose a sentence that is sufficient but not greater than necessary to promote the purposes of punishment,&#8217;\u201d Ketanju explained.<\/p>\n<p>Ketanji further noted that those statutes were created at a time when\u00a0\u201cmore serious child pornography offenders\u201d were judged based on the \u201cnumber of photographs that they received in the mail,\u201d adding that they\u00a0\u201cmade total sense before when we didn\u2019t have internet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the way that the guideline is now structured based on that set of circumstances is leading to extreme disparities in the system because it\u2019s so easy for people to get volumes of this kind of material now by computers,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s not doing the work of differentiating who is a more serious offender in the way that it used to. So, the commission has taken that into account, and perhaps more importantly, courts are adjusting their sentences in order to account for the changed circumstances \u2014 but it says nothing about the court\u2019s view of the seriousness of this offense.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sen.
