The 1630 Fund\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/biden-white-house-pack-supreme-court-sixteen-thirty-paige-herwig\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spent<\/a>\u00a0nearly $60 million to support Biden\u2019s 2020 candidacy. Notably, the Arabella network\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/01\/29\/us\/politics\/democrats-dark-money-donors.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spent<\/a>\u00a0more than $1.2 billion during the 2020 campaign cycle on behalf of Biden.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>Demand Justice\u2019s donors and the 1630 Fund\u2019s donors are unknown to the public, making them a dark money group. Executive director of Americans for Public Trust Caitlin Sutherland\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/biden-white-house-pack-supreme-court-sixteen-thirty-paige-herwig\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a>\u00a0Fox News, \u201cBecause Demand Justice is [the] trade name of the Sixteen Thirty Fund, we can\u2019t see on their tax returns how much of the overall budget is being spent on Demand Justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Notable Demand Justice alumni in Biden\u2019s White House include Herwig, one of the group\u2019s first hires who served as deputy chief counsel, along with White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki, who worked as a communications consultant for the group.<\/p>\n<p>After Biden selected Herwig to serve as Senior Counsel, Demand Justice\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/demandjustice.org\/demand-justice-praises-biden-selection-of-judicial-nominations-expert-paige-herwig\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claimed<\/a>, \u201cNo one is better positioned to carry forward President-elect Biden\u2019s commitment to rebalancing our judicial system.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Demand Justice Chief Counsel Christopher Kang\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/demandjustice.org\/demand-justice-praises-biden-selection-of-judicial-nominations-expert-paige-herwig\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">praised<\/a>\u00a0Biden\u2019s \u201cphenomenal start when it comes to judicial nominations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Herwig focuses on Biden\u2019s judicial nominations as Senior Counsel in the White House counsel\u2019s office. Herwig has admittedly been working on Biden\u2019s judicial appointments \u201cout of the gate,\u201d after learning her lesson while serving under former President Barack Obama\u2019s administration.<\/p>\n<p>Herwig\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.courthousenews.com\/bidens-judges-more-diverse-and-more-of-them\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a>\u00a0Courthouse News, \u201cA lot of people learned the lesson that if you don\u2019t think about judges out of the gate, there\u2019s so much else going on at the beginning of an administration, it can be very easy to have things slip through the cracks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Herwig is responsible for managing the flow of information to Biden on judicial nominations, according to <em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6144413\/joe-biden-supreme-court-nominee-process\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TIME.<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Herwig\u2019s former employer, Demand Justice, played a key role in directing Biden\u2019s attention to Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson. Jackson was placed on Demand Justice\u2019s Supreme Court\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/demandjustice.org\/supreme-court-shortlist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shortlist<\/a>\u00a0of judges who illustrate \u201cthe breadth of progressive talent available to a president committed to nominating a diverse group of justices.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Demand Justice was also influential in securing Jackson\u2019s appointment to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, which is thought to be a stepping stone for potential Supreme Court nominees. Demand Justice launched a six-figure ad\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/demandjustice.org\/demand-justice-kicks-off-six-figure-ad-campaign-targeted-to-black-audiences-in-support-of-ketanji-brown-jackson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">campaign<\/a>\u00a0\u201ctargeting to black audiences\u201d in support of her confirmation to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals.<\/p>\n<p>After the U.S. Senate confirmed Jackson to the D.C. Circuit, Demand Justice led the campaign that \u201c<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/ballsandstrikes.org\/scotus\/stephen-breyer-retiring-huzzah\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shamed<\/a>\u201d Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer into retirement. After Breyer warned Democrats against packing the Supreme Court, Demand Justice called on Breyer to retire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t afford to risk Democrats losing control of the Senate before President Biden can follow through on his promise to nominate the first Black woman Supreme Court justice,\u201d\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WeDemandJustice\/status\/1380491252299337730\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tweeted<\/a>\u00a0Demand Justice. \u201cIt\u2019s time for Justice Breyer to announce his retirement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Justice Breyer finally announced his retirement in January, Demand Justice was so confident Jackson would be Biden\u2019s pick that the dark money group produced ads to support Jackson even before Biden announced her nomination. \u201cDemand Justice has already produced ads to support Jackson in case she\u2019s chosen, a source familiar with the matter said,\u201d NBC\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/supreme-court\/liberals-circle-wagons-ketanji-brown-jackson-bidens-supreme-court-deci-rcna17437\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Demand Justice sent a\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/supreme-court\/liberals-circle-wagons-ketanji-brown-jackson-bidens-supreme-court-deci-rcna17437\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a>\u00a0to Biden on behalf of 12 groups urging him to nominate someone with a public defender background, as Jackson has.<\/p>\n<p>Since Biden officially announced Jackson\u2019s nomination, Demand Justice announced an initial ad campaign worth $1 million. However, it will not stop with the first million. Demand Justice is prepared to spend unlimited amounts of money to support Jackson\u2019s confirmation to the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>Demand Justice Executive Director Brian Fallon, who worked on Hillary Clinton\u2019s 2016 campaign,\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a>\u00a0CNBC his group is willing to \u201cspend whatever is needed to ensure\u201d Jackson\u2019s confirmation.<\/p>\n<p>To no surprise, Herwig has played a \u201c<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/ketanji-brown-jacksons-hearings-to-focus-on-legal-experience-record-on-crime-11647781202?mod=mhp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prominent<\/a>\u201d role during Jackson\u2019s confirmation process.
