Russia had initially invaded Ukraine in 2014, colonizing its Crimean peninsula and supporting a violent separatist uprising in the Donbas region that borders Russia. Putin escalated the conflict to a direct war between the Ukrainian and Russian militaries on February 24 in a speech in which he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2022\/02\/21\/ukraine-completely-created-russia-putin-recognizes-sovereignty-pro-russian-separatists\/\">insisted<\/a> that Ukraine had no \u201ctradition\u201d of being a country and was \u201ccompletely created by Russia.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>China has asserted that it acknowledges Putin\u2019s alleged \u201csecurity interests\u201d in invading Ukraine but has stopped short of recognizing the Donbas separatists as two separate sovereign states, the Donetsk and Luhansk People\u2019s Republics. China has also iterated that Ukraine has a right to be a sovereign state, challenging Putin\u2019s claims that Ukraine as a state is a fabrication directly attributed to Vladimir Lenin.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the war, Ukraine had a turbulent relationship with China. China is its largest trade partner and President Volodymyr Zelensky had enthusiastically supported Chinese investments in the country, as well as China\u2019s role in the debt-trap infrastructure plan the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Zelensky had also unilaterally sanctioned Chinese companies, however, for attempting to gain influence with critical national security corporations, and he nationalized the Motor Sich engine company to prevent Chinese companies from buying it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor decades, the Ukrainian-Chinese relations have been based on mutual respect, understanding and benefit,\u201d Kuleba said in a statement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukrinform.net\/rubric-polytics\/3436113-kuleba-we-call-on-china-as-global-power-to-play-important-role-in-ending-war.html\">posted<\/a> to Twitter on Monday. \u201cWe share Beijing\u2019s position on the need to find a political solution to the war against Ukraine and call on China as a global power to play an important role in this effort.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">For decades, the Ukrainian-Chinese relations have been based on mutual respect, understanding and benefit. We share Beijing\u2019s position on the need to find a political solution to the war against Ukraine and call on China as a global power to play an important role in this effort.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Dmytro Kuleba (@DmytroKuleba) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DmytroKuleba\/status\/1505910445776982018?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 21, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The state media site Ukrinform noted that Kuleba also called for more sanctions on Russia to limit its ability to sustain a military assault on Ukraine. China has repeatedly opposed all sanctions on any country generally and on Russia in the context of the Ukraine war specifically.<\/p>\n<p>Zelensky\u2019s administration has repeatedly attempted to get China more involved in the conflict with Russia. This weekend, top Zelensky adviser\u00a0Mykhailo Podoliak similarly urged China to take on a major role in the \u201cglobal security system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChina can be the global security system\u2019s important element if it makes the right decision to support the civilized countries\u2019 coalition &#038; condemn Russia\u2019s barbarism,\u201d Podoliak said, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukrinform.net\/rubric-ato\/3434343-podoliak-calls-on-china-to-join-civilized-countries-and-condemn-russia.html\">Ukrinform<\/a>, claiming the war was a chance for China to \u201csit at the table as equals\u201d with countries that had previously played a more outsized role in geopolitics.<\/p>\n<p>China has issued tepid statements of support to Ukraine and, in refusing to acknowledge the sovereignty of the Donbas regions, its actions show that Beijing is attempting to find a successful place on both sides of the war. China\u2019s ambassador to Ukraine,\u00a0Fan Xianrong, issued <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukrinform.net\/rubric-polytics\/3430195-china-will-never-attack-ukraine-ambassador-assures.html\">remarks<\/a> last week insisting that the Communist Party views Ukraine as a \u201cstrategic partner\u201d and China would be \u201ca good force for Ukraine, both economically and politically.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cChina will never attack Ukraine, we will help, in particular in the economic direction,\u201d Fan claimed. \u201cIn one year, our country imports goods from around the world worth more than three trillion dollars. We are ready to help you develop. In this situation, which you have now, we will act responsibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Chinese state has played a minimal role in the conflict. In addition to calling for dialogue in general terms and refusing to side with Russia on the Donbas region, China has insisted it would not offer any military aid to Russia in the conflict.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a powerful country, Russia does not need China or other countries to provide it with weapons,\u201d Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2022\/02\/24\/china-russia-ukraine-youre-on-your-own\/\">said<\/a> in February.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Shortly after these remarks, dictator Xi Jinping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2022\/02\/25\/putin-ready-to-talk-to-ukraine-after-chinas-xi-jinping-demands-he-respect-sovereignty\/\">called<\/a> Putin and reportedly urged him to seek \u201cnegotiation\u201d and respect \u201cthe sovereignty and integrity\u201d of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChina supports Russia and Ukraine to resolve the issue through negotiation. China\u2019s basic position on respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries and abiding by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter is consistent, Xi told Putin,\u201d according to China\u2019s\u00a0<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/globaltimesnews\/status\/1497174926234886145\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\"><em>Global Times<\/em><\/a>\u00a0state newspaper.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">China supports <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Russia?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Russia<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Ukraine?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Ukraine<\/a> to resolve the issue through negotiation. The Chinese government, through its companies, has also previously worked to undermine Ukrainian national security, according to Kyiv.<\/p>\n<p>In February 2021, Zelensky <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2021\/02\/03\/ukraines-zelensky-sanctions-china-attempted-takeover-key-defense-firm\/\">imposed<\/a> unilateral sanctions on several Chinese companies, including Beijing Skyrizon Aviation, for attempting to purchase Motor Sich, an aeronautics company that specializes in jet engines. Zelensky long insisted that control of Motor Sich was pivotal to Ukrainian military power and, thus, the country\u2019s sovereignty. When the sanctions failed to deter Chinese companies seeking to purchase, Zelensky <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2021\/03\/12\/ukraine-seizes-aircraft-maker-prevent-chinese-takeover\/\">nationalized<\/a> the company, claiming to return it to \u201cthe people\u201d to prevent Skyrizon and other Chinese companies from taking its leadership out of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Zelensky\u2019s ties to China warmed considerably in summer 2021, after President Joe Biden announced he would lift sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. The natural gas infrastructure project would have allowed Russia to sell natural gas directly to Germany and establish a stranglehold on the western European energy market, as well as isolating Ukraine out of that market. Zelensky, in fuming remarks that summer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2022\/01\/26\/biden-ignored-torrent-warnings-lifting-sanctions-russia-could-lead-more-war-ukraine\/\">insisted<\/a> that lifting the sanctions would lead Russia to further aggression in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Following the lifting of sanctions, Biden also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2022\/02\/21\/joe-biden-again-chooses-putin-over-zelensky-seeks-russia-meeting-after-ignoring-invite-to-kyiv\/\">repeatedly<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/06\/07\/jjoe-biden-snubs-volodymyr-zelensky-plea-for-personal-meeting-before-vladimir-putins\/\">snubbed<\/a> Zelensky\u2019s requests for an in-person meeting, choosing instead to meet with Putin.<\/p>\n<p>By July 2021, the\u00a0<em>Global Times<\/em> was boasting of signing major infrastructure deals with Zelensky.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew contracts signed by Chinese companies in the Ukrainian engineering market have exceeded $2 billion for two consecutive years, making positive contributions to the country\u2019s economic development, data from the [Chinese Ministry of Commerce] showed,\u201d the propaganda outlet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2021\/07\/05\/ukraine-inks-infrastructure-deal-china-after-biden-snubs-zelensky-putin\/\">asserted<\/a> at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Zelensky himself reportedly told Xi Jinping in a phone call that month that he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/07\/16\/ukraine-seeks-become-chinas-bridge-europe-after-biden-gets-cozy-putin\/\">hoped<\/a> Ukraine would become China\u2019s \u201cbridge to Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChina is Ukraine\u2019s number one trade and economic partner in the world.
