Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2022\/03\/21\/ketanji-brown-jackson-supreme-court-confirmation-live\/7051076001\/\">said<\/a> it most plainly:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy Republican colleagues and public figures have attempted to undermine your qualifications through their pejorative use of the term \u2018affirmative action,\u2019 and they have implied you were solely nominated due to your race. \u2026 Let me be clear: Your nomination is not about filling a quota.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"sIAHoCwtYgP1vHhQiMTlENpGm10AY2c8kQv0jgRap5rxdPb6tyoXO4j2CwFmzDUeeUW3sEnJBTnh5S8bVGXMW7JI\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;They have implied you were solely nominated due to your race\u2026Your nomination is not about filling a quota\u2026 It is about time that we have a highly qualified, highly accomplished Black woman serving on the Supreme Court,&#8221; Sen. Hirono says of Judge Jackson in opening remarks. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5CsFDDheXY\">pic.twitter.com\/5CsFDDheXY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 CBS News (@CBSNews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CBSNews\/status\/1505964838576603136?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 21, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Al Sharpton employed a similar deflection on MSNBC\u2019s \u201cMorning Joe.\u201d \u201cI salute President Biden in this case. He made a commitment, and I don\u2019t think it was based on some tokenism. I think it was based on him saying that the court ought to reflect the country, and a black woman has never been on the court, and you couldn\u2019t get one more qualified,\u201d Sharpton said, before implying that it was racist for GOP lawmakers to inquire about the nominee\u2019s law school admission test score.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><\/figure>\n<p>It\u2019s an odd basket of claims: that it\u2019s Republicans who made Jackson\u2019s nomination all about race, that anything was \u201cimplied,\u201d that describing the race-based selection as \u201caffirmative action\u201d is out of bounds, and that this has nothing to do with tokenism. <\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re strange claims because most Americans are old enough to remember just two months ago when President Joe Biden himself stated clearly and plainly that his pick would be \u201cthe first Black woman ever nominated to the United States Supreme Court,\u201d after making a similar promise on the campaign trail. It was the Democrat president, not Republican cynics, who announced that race and sex were deciding factors in the selection. \u201cY\u201d chromosomes and fair skin were disqualifying attributes before any merits could be considered.<\/p>\n<p>Other Democrats couldn\u2019t help themselves, playing into the identity politics game and marveling at the \u201chistoric\u201d nature of nominating a black woman to the high court \u2014 and all the while undermining Hirono\u2019s claim that it\u2019s Republicans who have centralized race in Jackson\u2019s nomination.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe appointment of a Black woman to the U.S. Supreme Court \u2014 let\u2019s be very blunt \u2014 should have happened years ago. This day is a giant leap into the present for our country and for the court,\u201d gushed Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Senate is poised right now to break another barrier. We are on the precipice of shattering another ceiling,\u201d said New Jersey Democrat Sen. Cory Booker, who is known for breaking Senate rules during the confirmation hearings for now-Justice Brett Kavanaugh with his cringe \u201cSpartacus\u201d moment. \u201cI just feel this sense of overwhelming joy as I see you sitting there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite Hirono\u2019s attempted deflection to her GOP colleagues and empty media assurances that tokenism is nonexistent here, it was Democrats who fixated on Jackson\u2019s race and sex. <\/p>\n<p>Now when Republicans inquire about her academic achievements and <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/03\/18\/yes-the-senate-should-investigate-ketanji-brown-jacksons-leniency-towards-sex-predators\/\">judicial record<\/a>, it\u2019s branded as veiled racism and sexism. Jackson proponents treat it like unjust scrutiny, as if a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing is supposed to be for grandstanding about \u201chistoric\u201d moments and not for judicial vetting.<\/p>\n<p>Try as they might to turn Jackson criticism on Republicans, this one is on Biden. He\u2019s the one who announced in other terms that Jackson is an affirmative action pick, just as he did with his vice president (and we\u2019ve seen how that\u2019s turned out). He\u2019s the one who invited intensified scrutiny of Jackson\u2019s merits and ideology. He reduced Jackson\u2019s qualifications to the color of her skin and the pairing of her chromosomes.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody \u201cimplied\u201d that Jackson was nominated because of her race.
