Ron DeSantis and would not eliminate the gas tax permanently.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Gas prices in the U.S. recently reached a record high, topping $4.33 a gallon on average, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/gasprices.aaa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">American Automobile Association<\/a>. Several states have considered temporarily waiving their gas taxes in an effort to combat rising prices, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/gas-prices-fall-oil-ukraine-russia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CBS News<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>A post shared on Facebook claims \u201cFlorida just eliminated their state tax on gas.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/10\/08\/fact-check-gas-prices-joe-biden-took-office\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Does This Picture Show How Low Gas Prices Were The Day Biden Took Office?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This claim is misleading. While Florida\u2019s legislature passed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2022\/7071\/BillText\/er\/PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Florida House Bill 7071<\/a>, which would temporarily suspend the gas tax for October 2022, the bill will not eliminate the gas tax permanently, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wptv.com\/traffic\/gas-prices\/florida-will-suspend-gas-tax-but-not-until-october\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WPTV<\/a>, an NBC-affiliated news outlet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Act exempts motor fuel from the statutory county fuel tax, municipal fuel tax, State Comprehensive Enhanced Transportation System Tax, and fuel sales tax, which equates to 25.3 cents per gallon,\u201d Bethany Wester, the communications director for the Florida Department of Revenue, told Check Your Fact in an email. She added that the legislature \u201chas not sent the bill to the Governor for signature or veto.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/taxfoundation.org\/staff\/jared-walczak\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jared Walczak<\/a>, vice president of state projects with the Tax Foundation, told Check Your Fact via phone that the gas tax suspension was temporary and noted that <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/energy-environment\/598917-maryland-georgia-halt-state-gas-taxes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Georgia and Maryland<\/a>\u00a0had also passed gas tax suspensions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut all three of these [states] and the other proposals being considered in other states are for temporary suspension of the gas tax, not permanent repeal,\u201d Walczak said.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time current gas prices have been subject to misinformation.
