Those who oppose the legislation refer to it as the \u201cDon\u2019t Say Gay\u201d bill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cESPN believes in inclusivity and denounces legislation and actions across the United States that infringe on any human rights. We stand with our LGBTQIA+ colleagues, friends, families, and fans,\u201d ESPN <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/espn\/status\/1506253502745563143?s=20&#038;t=kXlW5JMtXFC1BSMNVcEQXA\"><span>posted<\/span><\/a><span> to Twitter. \u201cWe\u2019ll continue to partner with organizations that support the LGBTQIA+ community, be accountable where we fall short of expectations, and never stop telling stories about LGBTQIA+ athletes, like the ones that we\u2019ll be sharing in this thread.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On Friday, <\/span><span>at the start of the second half between South Carolina and Howard in the first round of the women\u2019s NCAA tournament, announcers Carolyn Peck and Courtney Lyle announced a moment of silence in protest of the \u201cParental Rights in Education.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cNormally at this time, we would take a look back at the first half, but there are things bigger than basketball that need to be addressed at this time,\u201d Lyle said. \u201cOur friends, our family, our co-workers, the players and coaches in our community are hurting right now. At 3 o\u2019clock, about eight minutes ago, our LGBTQIA+ teammates at Disney asked for our solidarity and support, including our company\u2019s support, in opposition to the Parental Rights in Education Bill in the state of Florida and similar legislation across the United States.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cA threat to any human rights is a threat to all human rights,\u201d Peck <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/espn-announcers-protest-floridas-dont-say-gay-bill-with-moment-of-silence-at-ncaa-tournament-210856750.html?guccounter=1&#038;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly90LmNvLw&#038;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAMcV7XS3pYK4hMm41uF-XoSyfVLhPMPUg0cwLBX1fFrVPJxellhCpaYLbFoD60i3FQeRhtIz3_ABZ8LRGOLd_RrEPXkzlrrTbdbUC5iWcd9naG0GseHsmVN5SwVnf_9ZmuQAc80x0WqTk4XQ41leNZnr_ufryPUnVP6jztrd5qLR\"><span>added<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cAnd at this time, Courtney and I, we\u2019re going to take a pause from our broadcast to show our love and support for our friends, our family, and our colleagues.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Over at ESPN studios, anchor Elle Duncan also spoke on the response from ESPN employees, pausing her halftime broadcast in \u201csolidarity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cMany of our colleagues here at ESPN have planned and organized a walkout that will be happening at 3:00 p.m. eastern today,\u201d Duncan said at halftime of the South Carolina versus Howard game. \u201cAnd to be honest with you, we thought we were going to come here today and really celebrate a sport that has meant so much, and done so much, including for so much in the LGBTQI+ communities. But we understand the gravity of this legislation, and also how it is affecting so many families across the country. And because of that, our allyship is going to take a front seat. And with that, we\u2019re going to pause in solidarity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The<\/span><span> \u201cParental Rights in Education\u201d bill, has been passed <\/span><span>by Florida legislature, and is awaiting Governor Ron DeSantis\u2019 (R-FL) signature. The intention of the bill is to not allow kids aged 5-9 to be taught about sexual topics such as gender identity in the classroom. <\/span><span>The bill also gives parents more say in their children\u2019s education by requiring schools to notify parents if there is a change in their child\u2019s mental, emotional, or physical well-being and prohibits schools from <\/span><span>barring \u201ca parent from accessing certain records\u201d about their children\u2019s health and school curriculum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Disney employees \u2014 Disney owns ESPN \u2014 have staged walkouts over the past several days in response to CEO Bob Chapek\u2019s response to the bill. Chapek initially refused to condemn the bill, before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/03\/11\/media\/disney-chapek-apology-florida-lgbtq\/index.html\">apologizing<\/a> and \u201cpausing all political donations in the state of Florida.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><i>Joe Morgan is the Sports Reporter for The Daily Wire.
