There were Americans whose service came in the form of military action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter 9\/11, there were also lawyers who recognized that our nation\u2019s values were under attack, that we couldn\u2019t let the terrorists win by changing who we were fundamentally. And what that meant was that the people who were being accused by our government of having engaged in actions related to this, under our constitutional scheme, were entitled to representation, were entitled to be treated fairly. That\u2019s what makes our system the best in the world. That\u2019s what makes us exemplary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jackson said the Supreme Court rules that detainees could seek review of their imprisonment and had been assigned to legally represent them. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/17\/alarming-pattern-josh-hawley-supreme-court-nominee-ketanji-brown-jackson-record-child-porn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: \u2018An Alarming Pattern\u2019: Sen. Josh Hawley Questions Ketanji Brown Jackson\u2019s Record On Child Porn Rulings)\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFederal public defenders don\u2019t get to pick their clients,\u201d she continued. \u201cThey have to represent whoever comes in, and it\u2019s a service. That\u2019s what you do as a federal public defender, you are standing up for the constitutional value of representation. And so I represented, as an appellate defender, some of those detainees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She emphasized a criminal defense lawyer\u2019s role is to serve the Constitution and the court by arguing on behalf of their clients and that the Constitution \u201cdoes not get suspended in times of emergency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of Jackson\u2019s clients, Khiali-Gul, was a Taliban intelligence officer and the suspected leader of a terror cell attack near the city of Khost, Afghanistan, the Free Beacon reported. Jackson filed a petition for Gul where she accused the U.S. government of initiating torture tactics on detainees at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. She also accused the U.S. government of violating detainees\u2019 rights to privately communicate with their counsel, according to the outlet.<\/p>\n<p>Republican Missouri <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/21\/josh-hawley-abc-news-reporter-judges-child-porn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sen. Josh Hawley<\/a> expressed concern over her representing the detainees after entering into a private practice at a press conference, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kansascity.com\/news\/politics-government\/article259222170.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according<\/a> to The Kansas City Star.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe volunteered to continue that representation in private practice, which I think is interesting,\u201d Hawley said. \u201cAnd frankly, from my point of view, a little concerning.
