Eric Holcomb vetoed Monday a bill banning transgender females from playing on female sports teams.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/iga.in.gov\/legislative\/2022\/bills\/house\/1041#document-3b9c60d7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bill<\/a> would have prevented <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/02\/23\/ben-carson-tommy-tuberville-transgender-athletes-shouldnt-compete-womens-sports-title-ix\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">transgender<\/a> girls from participating on <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/02\/17\/school-board-critical-race-theory-brian-echevarria-transgender-athletes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">girls sports<\/a> teams at public <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/02\/04\/caitlyn-jenner-trans-swimmer-lia-thomas-shouldnt-be-able-to-compete\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">schools<\/a> for grades K-12.<\/p>\n<p>Had it been signed into law, the bill also would have allowed for a civil action suit to be brought against a school or institution subject to it if such an entity violated its provisions, according to the text of the bill.<\/p>\n<p>Holcomb said the bill \u201cfalls short\u201d of creating \u201cone consistent state policy regarding the fairness in K-12 sports in Indiana.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst, as to process, the wide-open nature of the grievance provisions in HEA 1041 that apply to all K-12 schools in Indiana makes it unclear about how consistency and fairness will be maintained for parents and students across different counties and school districts,\u201d Holcomb wrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.in.gov\/gov\/files\/Veto-HEA-1041.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">letter<\/a> to Speaker of the House Todd Huston. \u201cStudent-athletes could be treated differently according to which school they attend and compete for. Frustration of students, parents and administrators will likely follow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The governor also warned that other states with similar laws are facing several lawsuits, and thus \u201cany bill brought forward should address the issues raised in these lawsuits.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/21\/virginia-tech-swimmer-reka-gyorgy-slams-ncaa-rules-lia-thomas-compete\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: \u2018One Spot Taken Away\u2019: Swimmer Slams NCAA Rules Allowing Lia Thomas To Compete Against Biological Women)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Holcomb also said the bill \u201cimplies that the goals of consistency and fairness in competitive female sports are not currently being met.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI find no evidence to support either claim even if I support the overall goal,\u201d Holcomb wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmidst the flurry of enthusiasm to protect the integrity and fairness of women\u2019s sports in our state \u2013 a worthy cause for sure \u2013 this bill leaves too many unanswered questions such as those highlighted above,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n<p>Republican state Rep. Michelle Davis, who wrote the bill, said during a hearing that she wanted \u201cto make sure that all the opportunities are provided for our young females and we protect the fair competition for them so they have all those possibilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s trying to keep the focus on female sports and fair competition with sports,\u201d Davis said, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrtv.com\/decodedc\/politics\/indiana-is-one-step-closer-to-banning-transgender-girls-from-playing-girls-sports\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WRTV<\/a>. \u201cThat\u2019s what I feel the target of the bill is. Of course, mental health, I empathize with anyone who goes through mental health issues.
