A spokesperson for BBC News denied the network aired such a chyron.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span>Fact Check:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some 15,000 people have been arrested in Russia for demonstrating or participating in protests against Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine, France 24 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/europe\/20220318-fearing-arrest-russian-critics-of-ukraine-war-find-refuge-in-armenia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a>, citing independent media outlet <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OvdInfo?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OVD-Info<\/a>. Now, an image being shared on Facebook claims <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-60525350\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BBC News<\/a>, which has covered the conflict in Ukraine extensively, aired a chyron alleging these arrests prove \u201cRussia is not a true democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Facebook post\u2019s image shows\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b007mplc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BBC News at Ten<\/a>\u201d anchor <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/thehuwedwards?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Huw Edwards<\/a> reporting from a BBC newsroom with a \u201cBreaking News\u201d chyron across the bottom of the image. The purported chyron states, \u201cFootage of police violently suppressing anti war protests,\u201d followed by the sub headline reading \u201cThis proves Russia is not a true democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is peak Imperialist propaganda. Remember when the West absolutely crushed the Occupy movement,\u201d the post\u2019s caption reads in part. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2022\/03\/16\/fact-check-rothschilds-russia-putin-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Has Vladimir Putin Banned The Rothschild Banking Family From Russia?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The chyron is digitally altered. The alleged statement can\u2019t be found on the network\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/search?q=%22Footage+of+police+violently+suppressing+anti+war+protests+This+proves+Russia+is+not+a+true+democracy%22%22&#038;page=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=democracy%20(from%3ABBCNews)&#038;src=typed_query&#038;f=live\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">social<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/bbcnews\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">media<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/page\/228735667216\/search\/?q=%22This%20proves%20Russia%20is%20not%20a%20true%20democracy%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pages<\/a>. There are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=%22Footage+of+police+violently+suppressing+anti+war+protests+This+proves+Russia+is+not+a+true+democracy%22&#038;oq=%22Footage+of+police+violently+suppressing+anti+war+protests+This+proves+Russia+is+not+a+true+democracy%22&#038;aqs=chrome..69i57.1908j0j7&#038;sourceid=chrome&#038;ie=UTF-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">no credible news reports<\/a> suggesting BBC News aired such a chyron or that Edwards made the statements contained within the alleged chyron.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a fake\/mocked up image,\u201d said BBC World Service Head of Communications Philly Spurr in an email to Check Your Fact. \u201cIt did not appear on the BBC.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The unedited version of the image shows Edwards in the newsroom without a chyron beneath him and can be found in a 2015 article from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2015\/sep\/16\/bbc-could-be-forced-to-change-time-of-10pm-news-programme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Guardian<\/a> titled \u201cBBC could be forced to change time of 10pm news programme.\u201d The article makes no mention of protests, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine or democracy.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time a news network has been the target of misinformation regarding the conflict in Ukraine.
