Dick Durbin of Illinois, the chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, opened up the day by citing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/2022\/03\/senator-hawleys-disingenuous-attack-against-judge-jacksons-record-on-child-pornography\/\">National Review article <\/a>which takes aim at Republican Sen. Josh Hawley for pointing out Jackson\u2019s \u201csoft on crime\u201d track record. <\/p>\n<p>Much like the White House and its cronies in the corrupt corporate media, National Review was quick to accuse Hawley of orchestrating a smear about the Breyer replacement nominee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite your record, we\u2019ve heard claims that you are \u2018soft on crime.\u2019 These baseless charges are unfair,\u201d Durbin claimed. \u201cA conservative National Review columnist called claims brought by one of my colleagues \u2018meritless to the point of demagoguery.&#8217;\u201d <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"GiI0du6CEYeo1cPVTxA7MQKUBLbtzFpD9SqrmRNwf5s3\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Did I just hear Dick Durbin cite National Review in defense of Judge Jackson?<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Rachel Bovard (@rachelbovard) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rachelbovard\/status\/1505926324661239822?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 21, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Durbin also cited <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/nothing-sen-hawley-said-about-brown-jackson-has-been-debunked\">false \u201cfact checks\u201d<\/a> from the propaganda press as justification to discount any of Hawley\u2019s concerns about Jackson.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut also testified in defense of Jackson\u2019s record on Monday and cited the same National Review article to discredit Hawley\u2019s claims. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m likely to be followed by one or more colleagues who have raised allegations about your record that are simply unfounded in fact, and indeed irresponsible. They\u2019re unproven and unprovable. They\u2019re simply false,\u201d Blumenthal said. \u201cThere is simply no evidence to support these unfounded attacks. I found the commentary in National Review cited by Senator Durbin says about those allegations they are \u2018meritless to the point of demagoguery.\u2019 I agree.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"u0b2pIoXMYlB9EScDnOvGfA8HsRmK7qLkxhrNTzWQ4\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Blumenthal is now the second Democrat in Senate Judiciary to quote this National Review article dismissing Hawley&#8217;s critique of Jackson. She\u2019s been advocating for it since law school. And so I think there\u2019s a lot to talk about there and I look forward to talking about it,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I will note that some have said that the federal sentencing guidelines are too harsh on child sex crimes, especially child pornography. I\u2019ve heard that argument a lot in recent days. The chairman quoted someone earlier today who takes that point of view. I\u2019ll just be honest, I can\u2019t say that I agree with that.
