In fact, its concepts admittedly influence her decision-making. <\/p>\n<p>During a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/565127840\/1-20-20-UM-Law-MLK-Day-Lecture?secret_password=FPnMVYgBIOVxKgEZFL56\">lecture<\/a> at the University of Michigan Law School two years ago, Jackson highlighted the work of Professor Derrick Bell, who has been called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-godfather-of-critical-race-theory-11624627522\">The Godfather of Critical Race Theory<\/a>\u201d and whose 1992 book \u201cFaces At the Bottom of the Well\u201d rested on her parents\u2019 coffee table \u201cfor many years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember staring at the image on the cover when I was growing up,\u201d Jackson said. \u201cI found it difficult to reconcile the image of the person, who seemed to be smiling, with the depressing message that the title and subtitle conveyed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bell is credited with pioneering the fringe concepts of critical race theory that have since crept into the mainstream, and which condemn racism as a dominant vice embedded in every level of every institution that therefore warrants affirmative action hires. <\/p>\n<p>Another critical race activist influential in Jackson\u2019s worldview and also featured in the speech was Bell\u2019s wife. Dr. Janet Dewart Bell, who last year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=FykZ6KYidq8\">presented a slideshow<\/a> comparing the United States to Nazi Germany and complained of conservatives erasing history while leftists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westsiderag.com\/2022\/01\/19\/teddy-roosevelt-statue\">tear down statues<\/a>, was held up as a role model by the judge and potential Supreme Court justice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have drawn heavily from her excellent insights,\u201d Jackson told students of the critical race theorist. <\/p>\n<p>Beyond idolizing stars of critical race theory, Jackson offered praise for The New York Times\u2019 collection of essays that amount to an <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/03\/13\/correction-to-the-1619-project-proves-it-is-not-fit-for-schools\/\">inaccurate<\/a> tale of <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/10\/25\/nikole-hannah-jones-admits-her-1619-project-is-a-useful-narrative\/\">revisionist history<\/a>, the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/?s=%221619+Project%22\">1619 Project<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the same talk at the University of Michigan, Jackson held up the project\u2019s architect Nikole Hannah-Jones on a pedestal as an \u201cacclaimed investigative journalist,\u201d adding \u201cwho happens to be a black woman.\u201d The 1619 Project seeks to reframe American history as the story of a nation fundamentally built as an irredeemably racist empire with the sole purpose of oppression.<\/p>\n<p>Jackson gives credibility to Jones\u2019 thesis, <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/10\/09\/national-association-of-scholars-calls-for-revoking-the-1619-project-pulitzer-prize\/\">disputed<\/a> by the National Association of Scholars, that 1619 \u2014 when she says the first slaves were brought to the colonies \u2014 serves as a better year to mark the nation\u2019s true founding than when the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is Jones\u2019s provocative thesis that the America that was born in 1776 was not the perfect union that it purported to be,\u201d Jackson said, \u201cand that it is actually only through the hard work, struggles, and sacrifices of African Americans over the past two centuries that the United States has finally become the free nation that the Framers initially touted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jackson went on to read from Hannah-Jones on a podcast, emphasis hers:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n[W]e are raised to think about 1776 as the beginning of our democracy. But when that ship arrived on the horizon . . . in 1619 [the] decision made by the colonists to purchase that group of 20 to 30 human beings\u2014 <strong>that<\/strong> was a beginning, too.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>As Jackson testifies before the Senate this week, her record on sentencing for sex crimes has come under scrutiny after she built a reputation on the bench for <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/03\/18\/yes-the-senate-should-investigate-ketanji-brown-jacksons-leniency-towards-sex-predators\/\">under-sentencing<\/a> child sex predators.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn every single child porn case for which we can find records, Judge Jackson deviated from the federal sentencing guidelines in favor of child porn offenders,\u201d wrote Missouri GOP Sen. Josh Hawley in a Twitter thread documenting Jackson\u2019s prior rulings. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"FysnEUe9HJSoOljvGLt\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">On the federal bench, Judge Jackson put her troubling views into action. In every single child porn case for which we can find records, Judge Jackson deviated from the federal sentencing guidelines in favor of child porn offenders<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Josh Hawley (@HawleyMO) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HawleyMO\/status\/1504221948955475969?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 16, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWhile at the U.S. Sentencing Commission, Judge Jackson advocated for eliminating the existing mandatory minimum sentences for child porn,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/03\/18\/yes-the-senate-should-investigate-ketanji-brown-jacksons-leniency-towards-sex-predators\/\">explained<\/a> The Federalist\u2019s Rachel Bovard, \u201csuggesting that at least some people who possess child porn aren\u2019t sexually motivated, but simply \u2018in this for either the collection, or the people who are loners and find status in their participation in the community.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, records remain under seal from U.S. senators as they prepare to offer \u201cadvice and consent\u201d to the presidential nominee. According to Iowa Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley, 48,000 pages of documents from her time on the Commission are inaccessible. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><\/figure>\n<p>Criminal justice reform in favor of weaker penalties for offenders is a primary pillar of the left-wing social justice movement.
