And this is only the start,\u201d Habeck <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/qatar-to-help-germany-cut-reliance-on-russian-gas-says-minister\/a-61191584\">said<\/a>, per German public broadcaster Deutsche Welle.<\/p>\n<p>The Green politician said that Germany plans on transporting the liquid natural gas (LNG) from Qatar \u2014 which is one of the top three producers in the world \u2014 onboard ships rather than through pipelines.<\/p>\n<p>However, this will require the construction of terminals at German docks to receive the gas. Habeck admitted that while his country has approved the construction of two such LNG terminals, they likely will not be operable until at least 2026 \u2014 meaning that it is unclear how much gas can actually be supplied to Germany by Qatar in the near future.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Though Germany has of late taken some belated steps against its dependence on Russian gas, for example by putting the kibosh on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline \u2014 at least for now \u2014 it has so far refused to enact a U.S.-style embargo on Russian gas.<\/p>\n<p>Germany, which is dependent on Russia for about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/how-dependent-is-germany-russian-gas-2022-03-08\/\">one-third<\/a> of its natural gas, has been hard hit by the global surge in energy costs amid the war in Ukraine, with gasoline prices <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/whats-behind-rising-gas-prices-in-germany\/a-61193549\">surging<\/a> to\u00a0\u20ac2.13 per litre ($8.92 per gallon) and\u00a0\u20ac2.25 per litre ($9.43 per gallon) for diesel at the pump.<\/p>\n<p>Yet the economic powerhouse of Europe \u2014 which has banned fracking domestically \u2014 has refused to back away from its \u201cgreen\u201d agenda and is still planning to phase out all of its nuclear reactors by next year.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">People can be publicly executed for &#8220;crimes&#8221; including apostasy and sorcery under Islamic law in Saudi Arabia by medieval and even pre-medieval methods such as stoning, although the preferred method of execution is beheading with a scimitar <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/KWnVu3nxTS\">https:\/\/t.co\/KWnVu3nxTS<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Breitbart London (@BreitbartLondon) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BreitbartLondon\/status\/1502978954889768969?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 13, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The liquid natural gas deal with Qatar has come under criticism for trading one authoritarian regime for another to meet its energy demands.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Indeed, while Qatar currently serves on the United Nations\u00a0Human Rights Council (UNHRC), the Islamic kingdom has been long-chastised for its human rights record.<\/p>\n<p>The Islamist state, where \u201cIslam\u00a0is official religion\u2026 and\u00a0sharia\u00a0a principal source of legislation,\u201d according to the constitution, is ruled as a near-absolute monarchy by Sheik\u00a0Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, with political parties banned, elections highly restrive, and of minimal importance to the country\u2019s governance.<\/p>\n<p>Though Qatari citizens are some of the wealthiest in the world, due to the county\u2019s large oil and gas reserves, the majority of the population is comprised of non-citizens who have effectively zero political rights and minimal civil liberties, according to Freedom House\u2019s 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomhouse.org\/country\/qatar\/freedom-world\/2021\">report<\/a> on the country \u2014 which gave Qatar a score of 25 out of 100 on its Freedom Index.<\/p>\n<p>The issue of human rights abuses against the non-citizens of Qatar drew international attention after the Islamic kingdom was awarded the right to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2021\/feb\/23\/revealed-migrant-worker-deaths-qatar-fifa-world-cup-2022\">report<\/a> from <em>The Guardian<\/em> newspaper last February, some 6,500 migrant workers from South-East Asian nations such as Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka have died in Qatar over the past decade constructing World Cup stadiums and other venues in perilous conditions such as extreme heat \u2014 but some migrants are said to have died from \u201casphyxiation due to hanging\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The report notes that the true death toll was likely much higher, given that figures from 2020 were not included and because the paper was unable to secure figures from other migrant origin countries including Kenya and the Philipines.<\/p>\n<p>Mocking the deal with the Qataris, a satirical article in the German newspaper <em>Die Welt<\/em>\u00a0facetiously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welt.de\/satire\/article237670115\/Habeck-besiegelt-Deal-Katar-bekommt-EM-2024-von-Deutschland.html\">proclaimed<\/a> that \u201crelief in Germany is huge.
