School lockdowns seem to have a worse effect on these children\u2019s education, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1PoIT4Y8ut0zIyMQ60z24yMbIwR1M3DQK\/view\">data<\/a> released by the San Francisco school district.<\/p>\n<p>According to The Chronicle, \u201cBlack and Latino students were also more likely to be absent at least 60% of the time during the fall semester.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The report comes after the CDC released guidelines detailing how schools can reopen last week, and the Biden administration\u2019s lack of involvement has been <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/02\/09\/biden-admin-bows-to-teachers-union-pressure-says-school-reopening-goal-should-be-just-one-day-per-week\/\">criticized<\/a> for appearing to be more concerned with the teachers\u2019 unions than with getting students back into the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky discussed the efforts to reopen schools. However, it is still unclear when this will happen.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/cdc-director-admits-its-not-just-science-that-affects-our-guidance-on-opening-schools\">The Daily Wire<\/a> reported,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Oddly, Walensky&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OpenFCPS2020\/status\/1361271187968569350\/photo\/1\">closed the press conference by noting<\/a>&nbsp;that she and the CDC could not commit to the idea that following their own guidelines to the letter would produce full time, in-classroom learning again, even if all teachers were fully vaccinated. Instead, she suggested that \u201cmitigation strategies\u201d would have to remain in effect until there was evidence of vaccine \u201cdurability.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Health experts say that academic struggles are not the only thing negatively affecting children \u201cacross the demographic spectrum, with mental health, eating disorders and emotional scarring adding to a devastating picture,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/bayarea\/article\/S-F-schools-see-learning-gaps-widen-during-15912588.php#:~:text=schools%20see%20learning%20gaps%20widen%20during%20pandemic,-Jill%20Tucker&amp;text=Black%2C%20Latino%20and%20Asian%20students,released%20by%20the%20school%20district.\">The Chronicle<\/a> notes.<\/p>\n<p>The UCSF director of COVID response, Dr. Jeanne Noble, said, \u201cThere are so many kids in this pandemic who just haven\u2019t been heard from at all\u2026Every place you look \u2014 signs of social phobia and isolation all the way up to suicide attempts \u2014 screams crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schools are also concerned with the difficulties of getting students back on track after they do resume in-person learning. Children who have fallen behind will <a href=\"https:\/\/webcache.googleusercontent.com\/search?q=cache:gAQJ8dY6jNEJ:https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/bayarea\/article\/S-F-schools-see-learning-gaps-widen-during-15912588.php+&amp;cd=1&amp;hl=en&amp;ct=clnk&amp;gl=us\">reportedly<\/a> \u201clikely fall below grade level in academics, missing key foundational skills needed to advance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, some might not be forthright about how dire the situation is for children from disadvantaged communities.<\/p>\n<p>As reported by The Chronicle,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>School board President Gabriela L\u00f3pez did not specifically address the problem of learning loss, but she said that parents are doing an amazing job helping their students and that learning has not stopped during the pandemic \u2014 rather, it is just different.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThey are learning more about their families and their cultures, spending more time with each other,\u201d L\u00f3pez said. \u201cThey\u2019re just having different learning experiences than the ones we currently measure, and the loss is a comparison to a time when we were in a different space.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The mode of learning might be different, but the data from San Francisco seems to confirm that students are struggling, and \u201c[g]roups that were lagging tended to fall further behind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asian students overall, while losing more academic ground than whites, started from a point of generally outperforming all other demographics, including whites. We want to return to (school) sites as quickly as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The San Francisco Unified School District has been criticized recently for its efforts to rename 44 schools whose names they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/san-francisco-school-board-delays-reopening-classroom-talks-for-renaming-discussions-instead\">reportedly<\/a> claim&nbsp;represent \u201cWhite supremacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/san-francisco-school-board-delays-reopening-classroom-talks-for-renaming-discussions-instead\">Fox News<\/a> reported that the school board postponed a vote on reopening schools and chose to discuss the renaming issue. However, the school district seems intent on changing decisions of the past rather than creating solutions for the present day.
