Three stark examples?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201c<strong>Nightmare Alley<\/strong>\u201d (Guillermo del Toro) $11 million<\/li>\n<li>\u201c<strong>Licorice Pizza<\/strong>\u201d (Paul Thomas Anderson) $16.9 million (to date)<\/li>\n<li>\u201c<strong>Moonfall<\/strong>\u201d (Roland Emmerich) $19 million<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So Channing Tatum\u2019s big-screen comeback, an original yarn with a tepid title, seemed like another box office dog.\u00a0Instead, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/channing-tatums-dog-delivers-heartland-humor-heart\/\">DOG<\/a>\u201d is a hit, devouring the scraps left behind by Batman and that wall-crawler.<\/p>\n<p>The film\u2019s current box office haul? A tidy $<a href=\"https:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/release\/rl1831174913\/?ref_=bo_we_table_5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">54 million, and growing<\/a>. This weekend, the movie fell just 21 percent from the previous week despite losing 100 screens nationwide and becoming available for VOD viewing. The film opened with a strong but not overwhelming $15 million, but word of mouth subsequently kicked in.<\/p>\n<p>That, plus a very modest $15 million budget, means this \u201cDOG\u201d proved a wise investment.<\/p>\n<p>Why? It\u2019s not too complicated.<\/p>\n<p>Tatum remains a charming, apolitical movie star who we don\u2019t see in every third film. In fact, before \u201cDOG\u201d and this month\u2019s \u201cThe Lost City,\u201d his last major role came in \u201cLogan Lucky\u201d five years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Absence makes the cinephile\u2019s heart grow fonder.<\/p>\n<p>Tatum aggressively stays above our tribal times, witness this <a href=\"https:\/\/hollywood-elsewhere.com\/dog-is-anti-woke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">telling quote from the Left-leaning AP:<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would not call myself a liberal. I would not call myself a Republican or a Democrat. I\u2019m not political \u2026 I do believe that the stereotypes and the generalizations can get us in trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The film itself is a shaggy dog of a yarn, veering from \u201cTurner &#038; Hooch\u201d-style yuks to dramatic moments tied to the main character\u2019s PTSD. That dual storytelling shouldn\u2019t work, on paper, but Tatum (the film\u2019s co-director) ties it all together.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s more here, though.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDOG\u201d is resolutely pro-U.S. troops. The film isn\u2019t about combat or winning wars, but it showcases soldiers in a deeply empathetic light. They fight, see their fellow soldiers die on the battlefield and, later, return home to live as if nothing ever happened.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s impossible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDOG\u201d is part of a new wave of soldier-friendly films, think the outstanding \u201cThank You for Your Service,\u201d which respect the sacrifices men and women make for the country.<\/p>\n<p>That brand of pro-troop sentiment resonates with the heartland, witness previous hits like \u201cAmerican Sniper\u201d and \u201cLone Survivor.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned=\"\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CakuklvBQhO\/?utm_source=ig_embed&#038;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\">\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cDOG\u201d also pokes a little fun at the woke crowd, a rarity on screen. One segment finds Tatum\u2019s character bickering playfully with some very woke Portland women. The joke, at least here, is on them. Another features a pro-animal activist who resorts to violence rather quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Chances are that character doesn\u2019t have a MAGA hat in his closet.<\/p>\n<p>And, of course, Tatum\u2019s co-star deserves some credit. Americans love their mutts, and this critter, a damaged but recovering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.akc.org\/dog-breeds\/belgian-malinois\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Belgian Malinois<\/a> named Lulu, is a chronic scene stealer.<\/p>\n<p>Audiences will still line up for films that don\u2019t spawn from a comic book, toy franchise or beloved brand.
