Xavier Becerra on Friday identified \u201chealth equity\u201d as the department\u2019s top priority under his leadership.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHealth equity has to be part of everything we do,\u201d Becerra <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/hhs-becerra-pushes-health-equity-central-mission\">said<\/a>, during an address marking his first year in office. \u201cYou will see health equity pervades everything we do.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>For the left, \u201cequity\u201d means rationing and redistributing resources based on perceived oppression, privilege, and social status \u2014 typically based on race or gender identity.<\/p>\n<p>Becerra\u2019s commitment to the ideology marks an important milestone for a movement that has been proliferating among medical schools and professionals.<\/p>\n<p>As Breitbart News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2022\/01\/07\/white-coats-for-black-lives-calling-the-shots-at-americas-medical-schools\/\">reported<\/a>, the radical group \u201cWhite Coats for Black Lives\u201d has infiltrated American medical schools, forcing the \u201cequity\u201d ideology into many aspects of medical decision-making, ethics, and hiring practices.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>This group believes that \u201cthe dominant medical practice in the United States has been built on the dehumanization and exploitation of Black people\u201d and therefore advocates \u201c\u2018prioritizing\u2019 black patients over other patients and \u2018unlearning toxic medical knowledge and relearning medical care that\u00a0centers the needs\u00a0of Black people and communities.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the organization maintains that \u201cwhiteness is an invented political tool created through violence in the service of establishing domination,\u201d \u201cwhiteness has been historically used as a violent means for stealing lives,\u201d and \u201cracism, capitalism, and white supremacy are interdependent systems which lead to the particular dehumanization, exploitation, and murder of Black people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, the American Medical Association (AMA)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ama-assn.org\/system\/files\/ama-aamc-equity-guide.pdf\">issued<\/a> a 54-page manifesto called \u201cAdvancing Health Equity\u201d which teaches medical professionals how to agitate toward critical race theory-centric policies and practices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYet a rich tradition of work in health equity and related fields, including critical race theory (defined in the glossary), gender studies, disability studies, as well as scholarship from social medicine, gives us a foundation for an alternative narrative,\u201d it says, citing a\u00a0<em>Guide to Counter-Narrating the Attacks on Critical Race Theory<\/em>, \u201cone that challenges the status quo, one that moves health care towards justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instead of focusing on a patient\u2019s individual needs, the AMA contends that \u201cinequities cannot be understood or adequately addressed if\u00a0we focus only on individuals, their behavior or their biology.\u201d Rather, political considerations are paramount to healthcare.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis effort involves\u00a0confronting the mounting evidence of the health effects of structural racism, while grappling with understanding intersecting, complex, and deeply entrenched \u2018systems of power and oppression,\u2019 including white supremacy \u2026\u00a0classism, homophobia, xenophobia, ableism and sexism,\u201d the guide says.<\/p>\n<p>A chart in the guide suggests replacing some commonly used words with other \u201cequity-focused alternative[s],\u201d such as replacing the word \u201cfairness\u201d with the phrase \u201cSocial Justice,\u201d replacing the word \u201cminority\u201d with \u201chistorically marginalized or minoritized or BIPOC,\u201d and using\u00a0\u201coppressed\u201d in place of \u201cdisadvantaged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is yet unclear how Becerra\u2019s determination to focus on \u201chealth equity\u201d will affect how Americans receive healthcare.<\/p>\n<p><em>Breccan F.
