His vehicle\u2019s battery caught fire, requiring firefighters\u2019 assistance twice because the smoldering battery reignited.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>Virgin\u2019s car burst into\u00a0flames in June 2020 outside a Miami body shop where he was waiting for a repair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUp until the bursting into flames thing, it was the best car that I\u2019ve ever owned,\u201d Virgin said. \u201cI absolutely adored that car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Detroit\u00a0 News <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/in-depth\/business\/autos\/2022\/03\/17\/battery-fires-recalls-threaten-ev-acceptance\/6117505001\/?build=native-web_i_p\">reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Today\u2019s modern electric powertrain technology, pioneered by General Motors Co., Tesla Inc. and a handful of global automakers, is transforming the global industry even as\u00a0it exposes\u00a0some unintended consequences. Among them:\u00a0Batteries,\u00a0if defective, can\u00a0catch fire, burn\u00a0for hours\u00a0and release toxic fumes.<\/p>\n<p>Virgin\u2019s EV\u00a0was\u00a0one of more than 141,000 Bolts GM\u00a0later\u00a0recalled for battery-fire risk after the Detroit automaker and its battery supplier identified two manufacturing defects blamed for<b>\u00a0<\/b>18 non-crash-related fires.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_15350292\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/media.breitbart.com\/media\/2021\/01\/GettyImages-1180954684.png\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">An electric car and a plug-in hybrid car charge at a public charging station on October 12, 2019, in Berlin. (Photo by Sean Gallup\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The <em>Detroit News<\/em> article tried to promote electric vehicles and cited studies that show gas-powered vehicles also catch fire, including Hyundai and Kia,\u00a0which have been recalled because of fire risk in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>But buried in the report is other bad news about electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Firefighters fighting a\u00a0blaze on a car-carrying cargo ship\u00a0that\u00a0sank earlier this month in the Atlantic Ocean said electric cars complicated the operation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe cars are electric, and part of the fire is the batteries that are still burning,\u201d a spokesman for Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V., which salvaged the ship, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/burning-electric-vehicle-batteries-complicate-efforts-to-fight-fire-on-drifting-ship-in-atlantic-ocean-11645385571?mod=article_relatedinline\">told<\/a> the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 EVs made up only three percent of U.S. vehicle sales in 2021.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIf automakers can\u2019t persuade growing numbers of customers to ditch their fossil fuel rides and go electric, the resistance could imperil billions of dollars in investment,\u201d the <em>Detroit News<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 GM is not the only EV producer with battery problems. BMW AG has recalled hybrid vehicles because of battery manufacturing problems. Hyundai Motor Co. has\u00a0recalled thousands of electric Kona and Ioniq vehicles because of manufacturing defects that\u00a0short-circuited batteries, creating a fire risk, the<em>\u00a0News<\/em> reported. Stellantis N.V. recently recalled almost 20,000 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans because of fire risk.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Electric vehicles made up less than 0.4 percent of the total registered vehicle fleet in 2020, according to the National Highway and Transportation Safety.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEV fire recalls are going to cause your average consumer to want to be reassured that whatever the issue that is causing the issue is resolved from a design standpoint, a quality control standpoint,\u201d Jason Levine, former executive director of the Center for Auto Safety, said in the <em>Detroit News<\/em> report. \u201cI\u2019m not saying we do have a circumstance that in any way is preventing adoption.
