While not unprecedented \u2013 Cuban democracy groups and individual protesters, and the corresponding violence they endure at the hands of the state, have been a staple of the regime since Fidel Castro seized power \u2013 the protests were the largest in recent memory and notable for the large number of children and civilians unaffiliated with established opposition groups who took part. The protests also attracted outsized violence, including violent door-to-door raids in which some suspected protesters were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/latin-america\/2021\/07\/14\/cuba-video-shows-police-shoot-protester-front-toddlers\/\">shot<\/a> in front of their families.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<div id=\"attachment_17107676\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/media.breitbart.com\/media\/2021\/07\/Cuba-1.jpeg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">A man is arrested during a demonstration against the government of President Miguel Diaz-Canel in Arroyo Naranjo Municipality, Havana on July 12, 2021. As Miami\u2019s\u00a0<em>El Nuevo Herald<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elnuevoherald.com\/noticias\/america-latina\/cuba-es\/article259514929.html\">reported<\/a> on Friday, among the names were two 16-year-olds,\u00a0Giuseppe Belaunzar\u00e1n Guada and Brayan Piloto Pupo, sentenced to ten years in prison for alleged public disturbances and vandalism. A 17-year-old,\u00a0Kendry Miranda C\u00e1rdenas, received a 19-year prison sentence on charges of \u201csedition.\u201d Prosecutors had initially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotelevisionmarti.com\/a\/es-un-acto-de-venganza-no-de-justicia-familiares-de-menores-acusados-de-sedici%C3%B3n-no-esperaban-que-subieran-las-sentencias\/315370.html\">asked<\/a> for ten years in prison for Miranda. Two 18-year-olds,\u00a0Rowland Jes\u00fas Castillo Castro and L\u00e1zaro Noel Urgelles Fajardo, were sentenced to 18 and 14 years in prison, respectively, even though they were 17 and thus underage when they were arrested. Prosecutors had asked for 12 years in prison for Castillo and ten for Urgelles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government affirms that they are not minors because the Cuban penal code allows trying 16-year-olds as adults,\u201d\u00a0<em>El Nuevo Herald<\/em> noted. \u201cBut other laws identify the legal age of adulthood as 18.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Adults on the list the Supreme Court published received as many as 30 years in prison for alleged involvement in the protests. (YAMIL LAGE\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Supreme Court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsp.gob.cu\/noticias\/nota-de-prensa-1\">listed<\/a> two sets of alleged crimes that it appeared to attribute to all 129 people in its press release, one set occurring on July 11 and another on July 12. In the first, the court claimed, \u201cthey threw rocks and bottles at various officers, agents of internal order, National Revolutionary Police stations, police cars; they overturned a motorcycle and cars belonging to [the government] and injured others and caused great material harm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the second set of incidents, the Supreme Court claimed an unspecified number of the 129 defendants \u201cthrew rocks, sticks, bottles, and Molotov cocktails at agents of the Ministry of the Interior and others workers at state institutions.\u201d Of the 129 people, only one escaped elevated charges of \u201csedition,\u201d according to the statement.<\/p>\n<p>Families of the accused denounced the sentences on Thursday, insisting that prosecutors did not present sufficient evidence in the cases of their loved ones.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe were so desperate to receive the sentences, thinking that they would lower then and then we could appeal,\u201d Mar\u00eda Teresa P\u00e9rez, Castillo\u2019s grandmother, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotelevisionmarti.com\/a\/es-un-acto-de-venganza-no-de-justicia-familiares-de-menores-acusados-de-sedici%C3%B3n-no-esperaban-que-subieran-las-sentencias\/315370.html\">told<\/a> the U.S.-based Mart\u00ed News. \u201cWe did not expect them to increase the sentence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The mother of one of the young adults sentenced to 15 years in prison, 20-year-old Brusnelvis Adri\u00e1n Cabrera Guti\u00e9rrez, told Mart\u00ed News that he did not participate in the July 11 protests at all and that the photos prosecutors used to \u201cprove\u201d that he was there showed an entirely different person.<\/p>\n<p>Migdalia Guti\u00e9rrez <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotelevisionmarti.com\/a\/sentencian-a-15-a%C3%B1os-a-un-joven-que-ni-siquiera-particip%C3%B3-en-las-protestas-del-11j-denuncia-su-madre\/315372.html\">noted<\/a> that the man in the photos that prosecutors alleged to be Cabrera clearly lacked tattoos on his hand. Her son, she explained, has very visible tattoos and several witnesses testified to seeing him elsewhere that day at the time of the alleged \u201ccrimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cabrera\u2019s situation is not unprecedented; authorities reportedly arrested many individuals, including children, for being in the vicinity of a protest on July 11. In one particularly harrowing account, police <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/latin-america\/2021\/07\/26\/cuba-minor-house-arrest-watching-protests\/\">arrested<\/a>\u00a017-year-old Gabriela Zequeria Hern\u00e1ndez in Havana as she attempted to return home from a hairdresser appointment.
