Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) attempted to tie \u201cfossil fuel extraction\u201d to the kidnapping, rape, and murder of American Indian women. She intimated that local police officers helped facilitate this violence by protecting the safety of pipeline workers from violent environmental activists. And she seemed to blame the Keystone XL pipeline for crimes that took place in areas where it had not been built.<\/p>\n<p>AOC, who blames fossil fuels for climate change and has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/watch-ocasio-cortez-tries-grill-wells-fargos-ceo-ryan-saavedra\">asked<\/a> bank executives if they should be held responsible for climate change because of their services to the energy industry, said she found a \u201cvery meaningful connection\u201d between \u201cfossil fuel extraction sites and abductions and murders of indigenous women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ocasio-Cortez said \u201cruthless\u201d oil companies encourage violence, and she accused unnamed state legislatures of \u201cauthorizing and almost legalizing the use of violence against fossil fuel protesters.\u201d In fact, environmentalist protesters have frequently threatened \u2014 or perpetrated \u2014 \u00a0violence against oil and gas industry workers, especially at pipeline worksites. For instance:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A team of 20 environmentalist extremists attacked a pipeline worksite with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-10528525\/Trudeau-ignores-violent-terrorism-20-eco-terrorists-axes-surround-Gaslink-pipeline-workers.html\">axes and shot flare guns<\/a> at workers in British Columbia. They felled trees across roadways and threw torches at the Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers who responded. A policeman called the February 17 assault on the Coastal Gaslink pipeline \u201ca calculated and organized violent attack that left its victims shaken and a multimillion dollar path of destruction.\u201d No arrests were made;<\/li>\n<li>In September 2016, a group of protesters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/border\/2016\/09\/05\/militant-native-american-protesters-attack-pipeline-crew\/\">attacked<\/a> pipeline workers near the Standing Rock reservation, injuring four security officers and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/oil-pipeline-protest-turns-violent-after-american-indian-burial-sites-destroyed\">two dogs<\/a>; and<\/li>\n<li>One protester against the Dakota Access Pipeline <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/2016\/12\/dakota-access-pipeline-violence-rules\/\">shot at police three times<\/a> with a .38 caliber pistol. Other demonstrators threatened cops with Molotov cocktails and hurled feces at them. Security guards also say the Green activists attacked them, flashing a handgun and a knife.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ocasio-Cortez seemed outraged that local police officers would \u201cprotect their extraction sites\u201d from such protests, \u201ceven when workers are raping and killing indigenous women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>AOC seemed to say that proposing a pipeline caused murders to increase. The congresswoman reported that 10% of indigenous murders or kidnappings that took place in \u201cstates affiliated with pipeline projects\u201d had \u201coccurred in counties where the Keystone Pipeline alone is proposed to be built.\u201d Ocasio-Cortez did not explain how the future construction of the pipeline retroactively caused deaths and kidnappings to occur in the past.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AOC?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@AOC<\/a>: &#8220;Fossil Fuel extraction&#8221; is correlated with &#8220;abduction and murders of indigenous women across the United States&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/eUXYcNaJmQ\">pic.twitter.com\/eUXYcNaJmQ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Tom Elliott (@tomselliott) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tomselliott\/status\/1504566064084094986?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 17, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The hearing drew attention to the tangled, overlapping web of police jurisdictions that come into play at a reservation; unfortunately, not all of its conclusions were accurate.<\/p>\n<p>AOC\u2019s witness \u2014 Angel Charley, executive director of the Coalition to Stop Violence Against Native Women \u2014 testified that oil and natural gas companies set up \u201cman camps\u201d for pipeline workers, who abuse American Indians with impunity, because \u201cmany tribes do not have tribal jurisdiction over non-Native workers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ocasio-Cortez asked whether this means criminals \u201cessentially escape jurisdiction from having a clear path to accountability because of where these sites are happening.\u201d Charley agreed.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, all crimes that take place on reservations are punishable \u2014 and some law enforcement officers say giving reservations more jurisdiction may <em>reduce<\/em> the number of prosecutions. \u201cThe FBI has exclusive jurisdiction for about 20 serious crimes on Indian land such as murder, rape, robbery, etc., and will come in and take over any investigation when and if those crimes occur,\u201d Tim Dees, a former tribal law officer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/if-you-commit-a-crime-can_b_1507190\">explained<\/a>. Some tribes allow local police departments to make arrests and bring charges on their land, while others entrust this exclusively to tribal law enforcement officers.<\/p>\n<p>Reservations are a frequent haven for American Indian fugitives. \u201cTribal governments are notoriously political, and taking enforcement action against a favored person, such as the tribal chairman\u2019s nephew, could be fatal to one\u2019s career,\u201d Dees wrote. South Dakota reservations sheltered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indianz.com\/News\/2018\/07\/17\/native-sun-news-today-county-looks-at-fu.asp\">22%<\/a> of all active felony warrants issued by the Pennington County Sheriff\u2019s Office in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>For her final question, Ocasio-Cortez asked Charley to explain \u201chow this collaboration between law enforcement and fossil fuel companies puts indigenous women, in particular, at heightened risk of abduction and murder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charley cited no facts and replied with only one sentence: \u201cThis is a continuation of state violence against indigenous women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think what we see here is that the data speaks [sic] for itself,\u201d Ocasio-Cortez replied.<\/p>\n<p>The Bronx socialist\u2019s comments came during a March 3 congressional hearing on \u201cThe Neglected Epidemic of Missing BIPOC Women and Girls.\u201d The Democrat-controlled House Oversight and Reform Committee echoed MSNBC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/joy-reid-goes-off-on-missing-white-woman-syndrome-candace-owens-has-a-question\">Joy Reid<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/oversight.house.gov\/legislation\/hearings\/the-neglected-epidemic-of-missing-bipoc-women-and-girls\">bemoaning<\/a> \u201cmissing white woman syndrome.\u201d While the committee asserted without proof that \u201cwhite women are given vastly higher levels of media attention than women of color,\u201d it admitted \u201cthe problem is impossible to measure\u201d due to a lack of data.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.house.gov\/meetings\/GO\/GO02\/20220303\/114460\/HHRG-117-GO02-Wstate-CharleyA-20220303.pdf\">written testimony<\/a>, Charley blamed the murder rate on \u201csystemic racism\u201d that is \u201crooted in the devaluation of [i]ndigenous lives since the onset of colonization.\u201d But the committee said, \u201cThe disproportionate rate of missing Black and Indigenous women and girls can be attributed to \u2026 higher rates of intimate partner violence against BIPOC women than white women.\u201d In 2016, the National Institute of Justice, a U.S. government institution, found American Indian and Alaska Native\u00a0women were <a href=\"https:\/\/nij.ojp.gov\/topics\/articles\/violence-against-american-indian-and-alaska-native-women-and-men\">1.6 times<\/a> as likely as non-Hispanic white women to suffer domestic violence. The difference in the rate of sexual assaults was not statistically significant.<\/p>\n<p>Critics of the hearing suggested that AOC should spend more time focusing on her own district\u2019s surging crime rate. \u201cAre they drilling in NYC?\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/paul02663276\/status\/1504648185712500739\">asked<\/a> one Twitter user.
